Error 1013 Restore error
It happened like this, I just saved my SHSH using TinyUmbrella(Saved SHSH: iphone4 4.2.1) (8C148)), btw, I have no idea why the saved SHSH is 4.2.1 because my phone was on 4.0.2. After saving I proceed to upgrade to 4.2.1 from iTunes and I went back to TinyUmbrella and accidentally click on the Start TSS Server so I stopped it and my phone got the cable picture with the iTunes logo right after, can't use it completely now. I tried to restore with iTunes but keep getting the 1013 error. Any advice? Thanks.

SHSHs saved is 4.2.1 because that is the only firmware Apple is still signing. It isn't saved based on what firmware you're running.
You're on 4.2.1, TU cannot kick it out of recovery on that firmware.
You need to downgrade to 4.1 to kick out of recovery.
You don't have SHSHs so you can't downgrade.
Depending on your device, if it is a 3G, you can go down to 3.1.3 without SHSHs. Any other device requires SHSHs. You should try to restore to a custom 4.2.1 fw made by PwnageTool. Set your device into DFU with Redsn0w's pwned DFU option before restoring to bypass any errors.

Thanks for the prompt reply, however I am using windows and I believe to restore to a custom 4.2.1 it will require a mac to do that?

You would have to find a custom fw online or from one of the users here on MMi. iYeow or eyeRobot have been helpful in sending users custom firmwares. If you haven't already upgraded your baseband to the iPad baseband and you would like to avoid doing that, request/find a custom firmware that does not include the baseband upgrade.
You can find my guide called "Are You Jailbreakable" stickied on the General Jailbreak section. Open the "MaintainBaseband" PDF and I find the section I wrote for using PwnageTool with Windows (after obtaining your custom fw).

iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download
I can't seem to find a custom fw for iphone 4 4.2.1 created by pwnagetool.
Thanks once again.

That's a stock firmware, not custom. You should find iYeow here on MMi and ask him if he will send you a custom firmware if you can't find it via Google

As long as you dont require unlock, you can restore to 4.2.1 by opening tiny umbrella, click advanced, deselect the box that says "set hosts to cydia on exit" then close tiny umbrella and try the restore again.

I don't think Pwnage tools 4.1.3 has an iPhone 4 bundle to be added to allow PT to create a Cfw of 4.2.1 . If you are trying to update to IOS 4.2.1, make sure u let apple verify your shsh or u have to save your 4.2.1 shsh in TU first b4 and let cydia verify your restore. Make sure you update your iTunes too.

Right Yeow, no iPhone 4.2.1 bundle yet (at least not officially). I think dev team is waiting on the untethered part before releasing that.

Can you clarify that a bit for me ? I'm stuck on 3.1.2 (as explained here, Stuck at 3.1.2, SHSH on file). I've been unable to upgrade to any f/w but I do have SHSHs on file for 3.1.2, 4.0, 4.0.2, and 4.1.

i.Annie explained TU in the thread I pointed back to and it was really easy after all. The other "guide" I read on using TU wasn't very helpful...
FWIW, I do have my 'hosts' file modified per Saurik's instructions from 1+ years ago.

All jailbreakers must use Tiny Umbrella, the latest TU will download all shsh blobs onto your computer.

To add to what was mentioned by another poster in another thread...
If you are having trouble restoring your phone, to pretty much any version, and you've used TU to "tweak" the system before..... you will probably need to move to a clean system to sucessfully restore your phone and get it working again.
After attempting to update my phone directly to 4.2.1 (it was jb on 4.0.2) I ended up with a phone locked in recovery mode. I tried everything in this thread and others, I apparently had my SHSH blobs saved (TU seemed to think so). I used the TU server, restored to different versions of firmware, tried kicking out of recovery, tried with TU completely off and just a normal restore. Cleaned my hosts file. Etc etc. Nothing worked. Moved to a clean platform and restored first time to 4.2.1 with no problems.
There's no reason why TU (or running it or something else previously) should prevent you from updating to the latest apple firmware if you want to. Whatever TU (or maybe a previous jb app? no sure...) does to the platform it puts it into a bad state that is not readily fixed (no apparent cause). This shouldn't happen.
So after spending hours trying to get my phone back I moved to a new system and restored with no issues.
I hope someone looks into this

Tiny umbrella sets your hosts to cydia when you close it automatically and by default. That is what will give people with iPhone 4 issues when restoring to 4.2.1. You should e able to just turn that feature off in timy umbrella's advanced settings so that a clean restore can be made.

As others have stated turning off the hosts modification feature does not work. Nor does removing the entries manually.

I have helped a lot of people restore without getting that 1013 error issue by deselecting that box in tiny umbrella. If that does not work for your then something else is wrong with your hosts file.

His fix was just to use another computer so it wont preserve your baseband doing that.
