Firmware Error - Experts Only
Hi,
First of all thank you for taking the time to read my post, appreciate it.
I was given an iphone 4 with the 4.1 firmware. I downloaded a custom 4.1 firmware and set phone on recovery mode to install it. During the process I got error 3194. I tried adding the line to the host file however, I still get the error. The phone keep rebooting and doesn't pass the apple logo. I tried installing an official 4.1 firmware but I still get the 3194 error.
Does anyone know what is going on? How can I fix and jailbreak the phone? I don't care much if the baseband gets upgraded as I'm on AT&T however, if it can be avoided it would be nice. The phone was not jailbroken before so any method which requires a previous cydia backup would not work.
Thank you.

The reason is because you don't have 4.1 shsh blobs. You can download tiny umbrella and find out.

Thanks for the fast reply.
I downloaded TinyUmbrella and I'm getting cannot start tss service do not try restoring your device pid 2028 must be killed.
How do I go about fixing the iphone without upgrading to the latest firmware and locking myself out?
Thanks,
Edit: I have an iphone 3G which I think I got the SHSH for as is still jailbroken and cydia asked before. Could I use this? Is there any other method?

You cant use another phone's SHSHs. Would you be ok with a tethered jailbreak?

Is there no other way around it? I don't want to update to the latest firmware.

I saved my iphone 3G SHSH right now with TinyUmbrella however, I can't save the iphone 4 SHSH.
How come I'm not able to recover the phone with an official 4.1 firmware? It had 4.1 installed and I'm not downgrading.

Ones apple stopped signing 4.1, Cydia cannot save your 4.1 shsh blobs if you haven't used Tiny umbrella to save it for you. Cydia can only save what is apple signing and once saved , all future shsh blobs will be automatically saved for you.

You can save your SHSH for 4.2.1 without being on 4.2.1

If you do decide to update make sure you open tiny umbrella, click on advanced, deselect the box that say "set hosts to cydia on exit" then close tiny umbrella before you start the restore. Otherwise you will get an error when trying to restore to 4.2.1.

Could you elaborate on that? As in step by step? I was able to save the SHSH on my iphone 3G but it won't save the iphone 4 SHSH because it cannot find the device. It wont go past the apple logo screen and keeps rebooting.

You need to be booted up regularly for tiny umbrella to be able to see the device to save SHSH for it. You can however find out your ecid and manually put it into tiny umbrella and then save them.

That's the problem, how can I get this thing to go past the apple logo screen? Is what I asked on my first post. I can use TinyUmbrella with my other iphone but it won't work on the iphone 4 because I can't get it to go past the apple logo screen.

Those guides will show you how to get your ecid to manually put it into tiny umbrella. But without 4.1 SHSH it wont make a difference. You are going to have to go to 4.2.1
