Do I update to the latest firmware through itunes or not? I was about to but you just said you do not have to update to save the SHSH. I'm not trying to be rude, just confused, lol. I got the ECID.

I just said you may as well update because you are stuck in recovery loop right? No sense leaving it the way it is. Did you put the ecid into tiny umbrella to see what SHSH you have?

I put the phone on recovery mode then connected it to TinyUmbrella whichfinds the phone labeled with numbers in recovery mode. I got the ECID using the method listed on that site and clicked Manual ECID and added the ECID then hit Create Custom Device. However, it says Device is not connected and won't save the SHSH. Could you elaborate on how to save the SHSH if the phone is on recovery mode and I have the ECID?

Hmmm, that should have worked. Well you may as well just go to 4.2.1 and save your SHSH when you are there.

I'm going to upgrade it then connect it to TinyUmbrella and save the SHSH. What is the best jailbreak for 4.2.1 on Windows? I was thinking of using redsn0w 0.9.6b4, is that the best method? If I don't turn off phone Cydia and all the apps should work right? If I turn it off, how does the phone go about to deleting the apps, if it even does?

Turn off your iphone with a tethered jailbreak will not erase your apps. All you need is to tether boot with redsn0w.
