Jailbreak/Unlock Tool Combo Confusion - Please help!

Hi All,

I have a T-Mobile iPhone 3G/FW 5.11.07/OS 3.1.2(7D11). I jailbroke in the past using blackra1n and I do not remember what I used to inlock (but I think it is Ultrasn0w).

I now want to try to upgrade FW to 4.2.1. I am running iTunes 10. What combo of JB and UL tools do I need to use that will allow me to upgrade and not lock my phone? I have seen some sites say use Redsn0w to JB but others say stay away from it. I think Ultrasn0w still unlocks, but I read something saying Ultrasn0w has issues within Cydia for 3G. I do not know what to use.

You would need to make a custom 4.2.1 with pwnage tool to restore to so that your baseband is preserved. Then you can use ultrasnow to unlock.

Thanks a million! Do you happen to know of any good guides that can help me do that? I have never done custom FW...otherwise I will try googling it:-)

This will give you the basic steps (even though this guide is for 4.1): iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.1]

Just adjust for 4.2.1, meaning you will need the newest version of pwnage tool 4.1.3 and use the 4.2.1 firmware instead of the 4.1. Also make sure when it asks you about the iPad baseband update that you say no. You dont want to do that.

One more question...do they only have instrutions for Mac? Will it be the same steps for Windows?

I am finding that Pwnage is for Mac only. I need a solution for Windows:-(

You will need to find a custom 4.2.1 made with pwnage tool then. Do you have a official sim to activate with?
