How can I tell which method someone used to JB & Unlock??
For business purposes, I now live in Western Africa. I personally have two iPhones (3GS JB/UL & iP4 JB/waiting to unlock) and everyone comes to me for help when they get an iPhone--for whatever reason.
A friend just got an iPhone while traveling and asked me make it cool... It's already unlocked but doesn't appear to be jailbroken. There are no other stores showing with the exception of the Apple App Store. I have a few hidden things on my phones, so I started looking around and was baffled. I rebooted the noticed the two lil pixilated lines when booted, so I assume that it was jailbroken at some point, right??
She is currently on 4.0.1, and wanted to go to 4.2.1 --I told her that I wouldn't recommend that yet because it is tethered. Her basband is 01.59.00.
I'm not really sure how I should proceed. No one ever saved a SHSH file for the device. Can I use my custom 4.1 files to restore at this point?? I tried via itunes and got an error code. I used Jailbreakme and installed cydia, confirming that her phone didn't have ultrasn0w--or anything else!
How is this device unlocked? Can I move her to 4.1.0?
Thanks in advance!!

It could be a factory unlocked phone or the unlock could have been installed in a different way. You may want to check the model number to see if is a factory unlocked. Your SHSH will not work for her device so download tiny umbrella to see what SHSH you can save for hers before proceeding.

You can put her on 4.1 with PwnageTool. If you don't have a Mac, you'll have to find a custom firmware made by PwnageTool online. This will preserve the baseband as well at 1.59.00 just in case it isn't factory unlocked. Seems like it is but I could be wrong.

He wont be able to restore to 4.1 without SHSH though Annie

To OP you should download tiny umbrella and check to see what SHSH you can get just in case. You never know, you may get lucky.

The two pixelated lines, if they are what I think you are referring to, were a side effect of the jailbreakme jailbreak. Other jailbreaks don't do that. If those lines were there before you ran jailbreakme, it was jailbroken at some point. It would be easy enough to delete all of your cydia apps and then Cydia itself if someone was trying to "clean" the phone without updating it before giving it to her. If it was jailbroken at some point, there is an outside shot that they used Cydia and asked it to make their life easier, in which case you could have the 4.1 SHSH on file. Use TU or iSHSHit (in Cydia) to see what hashes are available.
FYI, you can upgrade to 4.2.1 using custom bundles in pwnage to keep your baseband, then jailbreak using redsnow, but you will be tethered. I would not recommend that for a non-power user. However, 4.1 would be easy enough if you have the SHSH's and access to a mac (or custom firmware).

...yea, I tried that. Got mixed results. The model number is MC603B, which most sites say is a factory unlocked device. However several people have commented that their locked device has the same model number.

I kick myself continuously, but I leave my mac in the States; I only have access to my windows laptop here in Africa. I downloaded a custom 4.1 from Mahmood which claims to be made with PwnageTool, but it refuses to restore. I get a strange error code (not that which everyone else claims to get).
I assumed this was due to the fact that there was no SHSH stored for her on 4.1 --am I right?
Yea, the first thing that I did when I got the phone was connect it to TU. No such luck... When I JB it, launched Cydia and made my life easier, it just tells me it has a pending request--for the past few days. lol
Is it possible to delete cydia and leave ultrasn0w? And if so, would it not show up as an installed package when I reinstalled cydia? I kinda assumed that someone 'cleaned' up after themselves, but I just couldn't figure out how.
Other ideas that I had was if there was a way to hide apps??
I considered 4.2.1, but dismissed that until an untethered JB comes out. She is a pretty heavy user, and I'd hate to have her bother me every other day because she ran her battery down...Last edited by thunderhawki; 12-10-2010 at 04:43 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Sure it's possible. Look for ultranow.dylib in /Library/Mobile Substrate/DynamicLibraries/. This is ultrasnow. It the phone works without it, then factory unlocked.

If you cant tell for sure then you should just leave it as is until a untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 comes out. There should be a way of looking in the file system to tell if ultrasnow has been installed though.
Edit. Lol, Mes to the rescue
Thats pretty funny I was just typing this and you posted how to look for it. Weird

I have to agree with x98car. If you're not 100% positive, I would wait. It's looking like we will have a Merry Christmas indeed
