    Default problem jailbreaking/upgrade/unlock iPhone 4 4.0.2

I just got a AT&T iPhone 4. Default iOS is 4.0.2 with baseband 1.59. I need to use another carrier.

Afaik, iOS 4.1 and above will update the baseband to 2.xx, so I can't do that since I want to unlock my iPhone.

I know limera1n and greenpois0n can jailbreak iOS 4.1, so I thought it could jailbreak 4.0.2 too but I was wrong, as greenpois0n kept telling me jailbreak failed after several tries.

So I followed the redmondpie tutorial that with the help from tinyumbrella I can upgrade my iOS from 4.0.2 to 4.1 while retaining my current baseband version. I did not have the old tinyumbrella version from the tutorial nor any shsh blobs except 4.2.1. Anyway, it did not work. I was using iTunes 9.2.1 and it gave an error while (shift)restoring, so I upgraded to iTunes 10.1 and again got another different error. (all not baseband related error)

So basically I cannot jailbreak my iPhone 4.0.2, nor upgrade to 4.1 while retaining my baseband.

    Any help here?

Get Tiny Umbrella, connec. IPhone and save all.

    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella

TU won't fix anything but you will know your current restore options and be protected in the future.

limera1n should be able to jailbreak on 4.0.2 but greenpoison wont. You have 3 options as far as updating.
1: Wait for pwnage tool to be updated to support 4.2.1 restores while preserving baseband
2: Find unofficial pwnage tool to make a custom 4.2.1 now, you would have to google for it and use it at your own risk. I dont like using unofficial releases but thats just me.
3: If you use the tiny umbrella method of preserving baseband then you can update (do not restore and update, it has to be just a update) with the tss server running to 4.2.1. You will get an error and should be able to kick out of recovery with tiny umbrella.

Obviously the safest thing for you to do would be #1

Thanks a lot for the help, it is very useful. In that case I shall try limera1n and see if it works fine first... i won't wanna mess with pwnagetool because i feel its too advanced and i might just screw everything up

If for some reason you dont see the limera1n icon after doing it try searching for it in spotlight or even running it again on a different computer.

limera1n worked on my 4.0.2! Some said they encountered some issues with it so I wanted to greenpois0n first instead of limera1n, and since greenpois0n failed I thought limera1n was the same.

I hope I don't have any problems with this RC1b release.

edit: the icon is blank...nvm it's fine now after installing Cydia. Can I safely remove the limera1n app icon?

nope, limera1n's sole function is to install cydia. Once that is done it is not needed anymore.
