Looking for some advice from someone who knows whats what!
hey peeps, like most posters on this forum i've just been through hours of jailbreak stress and would really appreciate some advice on my options. im a relative newcomer to the forum but have read enough to feel i can now explain my problem.
Preamble
Iphone 3GS now on 4.2.1. bought the phone friday night, my bro-in-law (the one who knows about IT in our family, everyone has one!) jailbroke using limera1n and unlocked with ultrsn0w. For some reason the unlock wasnt successful and i later reran ultrasn0w which kicked it into recovery mode. without any knowledge of the consequences (face palm) itunes then restored it to 4.2.1 (grrr).
Several attempts later to jailbreak using redsn0w (0.9.6b5) with tethered connection i have opted to stick with 4.2.1 for the sake of my sanity (for the time being). i was able to jailbreak without issue but when i ran cydia and it updated files or i added a repos it rebooted and got stuck in recovery mode.
i have since read up on tinyumbrella and its saying i have SHSH files called 4.2b3 (8C5115c) and 4.2.1 (8C148a).
basically what im asking is what are my options. can i restore to 4.2b3 and then jailbreak? am i doing something wrong with redsn0w that is prompting it to go into recovery mode on reboot? am i best sitting tight and waiting for an untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1?
really appreciate you taking to read the above, if you have any comments, tips or advice I would be eternally grateful.
much love
pedro

You have no choice to restore to 4.2.1 as that is the only SHSH you have. Did he update the baseband to the ipad one when he unlocked it for you?

Pardon my noobishness but I'm not entirely sure which the baseband is. I'm taking a stab here but is this what is listed in the settings>about menu as modem firmware? If so I'm on 05.15.04.
What does that tell u?

ultrasnow cannot unlock that modem firmware (baseband). To unlock you would need to use the new method of updating your baseband.

Could you explain what the new method is??
Also you're talking about unlocking?? Are u saying that a jailbreak is possible in it current state? If so what method do u recommend?
Cheers

The new method involves updating your baseband so that you can unlock. If you are not interested in unlocking then don't do this.

Yeah I'm happy on the carrier the phone is locked to so I won't bother with that. If you could just tell me whether a jailbreak is possible using either of the shsh listed above.
Why wud it repeatedly enter recovery mode when it reboots from cydia? I'm only really interested in jailbreaking in order to get **********.
Cheers buddy

Cant help you with that, it is against forum rules (you can probably tell from it being starred out).
