iPhone madness!!!

I've literally gone through the worst 8 hours of my iphone life and am still looking for solutions if possible. Any help would greatly be appreciated. I'[ll try and keep this short but don't want to leave out any details.

18 hours ago I had a jailbroken 3GS with the 3.1.3 firmware. I was having issues with WinScp and after forgetting my alternate password for it, tried to fix the problem using a youtube tutorial. I used iFile and went into a file called "master password" if memory serves correct. I edited one of the lines and to my horrible surprise found that after a respring every single app I had was unable to be accessed.

I eventually tried to restore with iTunes but it would not allow me to restore back to 3.1.3. To my horrible grief I was left with no choice but to upgrade to 4.2.1. The jailbreak on my iphone was removed and set back to normal setting of the 4.2.1 but to my great frustration now I find that my SMS app does not work. It opens and I am able to view messages but once I click the send button the app crashes and closes.

I am on the verge of buying a new iphone purely out of frustration. If anyone can help I would be most grateful.

Is your iphone jailbroken at 4.2.1 ? Yeah, restore again will be your best bet.

I tried to restore back to 3.1.3, 4.0.1 and 4.1. iTunes kept giving me errors.

I also haven't jailbroken it because I hear an untethered version is not out yet and I don't know what the consequences of an untethered jailbreak will be.

I've also heard you cant downgrade unless you've saved SHSH files (whatever they are). Unless the iphone has done the automatically then I can rule that out cause I never remember saving such files.

You said you had a jailbroken iphone on 3.1.3 ?

Well there is a chance that you SHSH blobs are saved with Cydia. You need to download Tiny Umbrella and clik on save my SHSH and it will tell you what is on file for your phone. If you have 3.1.3 upto 4.2.1 saved you can restore to any of them firmwears by downloading the firmwear you want i.e 3.1.3 and running tiny and pointing it to that firmwear then doing a Shift restore in itunes.

If you do not need the unlock, then go to 4.2.1 through iTunes (clean restore will get rid of you problem) and then you can jailbreak, Teathered just means that when you turn you phone off and back on or reboot it then you will need Redsn0w to boot it up. So not a problem as long as you dont restart your phone a lot.

but try Tiny first
