upgrade OS 3.1.3 To 4.1?

i have an ipod touch 2g here and i want to jailbreak it but it has OS 3.1.3 how can i upgrade to 4.1 (wan't do it via itunes because then it would be OS 4.2)

First, save your SHSHs with tinyumbrella. Then put your phone into recovery mode (power for 2 seconds, power+home for 10, home for 30) and go into tinyumbrella and have it start recovery mode (or something like that) then press shift and hit the restore button in iTunes. Pick the .Ipsw file you have for 4.1 firmware and your set to go

You can only go to 4.1 if you have SHSH for 4.1. Do as waldo said and save your SHSH with tiny umbrella. Then you can figure out what firmware you want to go to.
