Unhappy Stuck at Apple logo after battery drain

    Hi guys,

I'm new here but figured it was probably the best place to get some answers as to how to go about fixing my iPhone.
It is a 3Gs currently running iOS 4.0.1 but jailbroken during its 3.1 phase with Blackra1n and upgraded to the current version sometime thereafter using jailbreakme.com.
I'm somewhat unsure as to the current firmware and baseband and cannot check, as explained below, but I believe it's 5.12 or 5.13 from what I remember.

This may be a little long-winded retelling but I want to make sure I tell it as it happened, just in case some detail may help.

My youngest brother asked if he could play some games on my iPhone. He was bored and both his brothers have iDevices and felt a little left out so I thought I'd be nice and let him have a play for a while.
All was well and the phone was functioning perfectly. At one point I went around to take a look at what he was playing and saw that he was on Stair Dismount.
It's a fun game so I had a quick turn & felt that the back of the phone was really hot. I know this happens from time to time when a game or app is very resource intensive or if there are a lot of apps open so I proceeded to check what other apps were running. Several games he'd tried and moved on from were still running in the background, so I terminated them and allowed him to continue playing hoping that would cool the phone down a little.

After a while I noticed he'd moved on to the 5 Minutes to Kill (Yourself) game. He continued playing for another 10 minutes or so before he mentioned that the phone was shutting down due to total battery drain and needed to be put on the charger. He mentioned he'd received no alerts or warnings and I remembered I had recently installed PopUp Blocker to manage notifications, which explains the lack of notifications.

He took it to the charging stand and left it there but 10 minutes later I realised he hadn't actually put it on to charge so I connected it and went about other business.
I came back about two hours later to find the phone seemingly booting up (the Apple logo & loading animation visible) so I unplugged it, knowing that it would be fully charged by now, and took it with me while I did some work on the computer.
After about 15 minutes or so, the phone had still not booted up and after careful observation, realised that it was stuck in a boot cycle.

Now, the phone was fine before this incident and had been reset once or twice after installation of the notification tweaks so I can't imagine that they would be the culprits.
I know that the phone would've gone into shutdown mode in the middle of a game, so I'm wondering if this is this likely to have caused the problem?

Although I have backups and can get the phone into restore mode, I'm a little hesitant to do so because it will update to the latest iOS version and baseband and I'd really like to keep my jailbreak and modifications. Should I be worried and will it still be jailbreakable after the upgrade?

Is there any coming back from this type of situation? What should my next step be?

I greatly appreciate any direction or help anyone can offer.

    Thanks heaps.

Yes, I have SHSHs blobs saved for it. Actually did so only last week with TinyUmbrella.

Whoops, I should have mentioned that.

    According to the list, I have SHSHs for 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.01, 4.02, 4.2.1 and 4.2b3.

Then you can use tiny umbrella to restore to any of those firmwares and be ok. As long as you dont go past 4.0.2 then your baseband will stay unlockable.

You can see here for help on how to do that: http://modmyi.com/forums/general/725...e-restore.html

Ahh great, thanks! I'll give that a go and see how it goes.

Ok, here's where I run into a problem. When I plug the device via USB it doesn't show up in iTunes at all so I can't pick the firmware to restore from.
Would entering recovery mode and clicking the Restore button in iTunes allow me to pick the firmware?

Yes it would, entering dfu is better when using tiny umbrella though.

Wait just a goshdarned minute...! When I click the Restore button while in DFU mode then click Restore and Update, it brings up the iOS Software Update window displaying the iOS 4.2 Software Update info. Is this right?

I haven't clicked to proceed yet. Just wanted to make sure it was right.

You need to download the firmware you want to go to from the links provided in the guide. Them you shift-click restore to that (when holding shift and pressing restore in itunes a window will open where you can choose the firmware you downloaded).

    Oh man.... right! Of course!!
    How embarrassment. :X
In my beer-fuddled state, I was pressing Shift+Right-Click on the iPhone. >_<

    LOL.
Perhaps beer + tech don't mix.

    All good now. Thanks again.
