Default is it ok to update iPhone 3G to iOS 4.2.1?

I don't want to make the same mistake I did with the last iOS on my iPhone 3G.

I have iOS 4.1 now and when I plugged the phone into iTunes today is said there was a new update.

Can I safely update to 4.2.1 and if so, should I still use redsnow?

Where do I get the latest redsnow?

    Thanks

If you do not need an unlock, then you can restore to 4.2.1 and jailbreak it with Redsn0w from here : Dev-Team Blog

Do you mean a carrier unlock?

If so then I don't need that as I have AT&T as my carrier.

What version of redsnow do I need to do this properly?

    Thanks

If I were you , I would just stay at 4.1 until the final release of IOS 4.3 which is around this mid December. Othewise you will have to do it all over again.

    That is interesting news. Thanks

Actually with my college schedule I may not even be able to get to it until near Christmas anyway
