Help! iPhone 3Gs won't upgrade, exit recovery
Help!!! I got a second hand iPhone 3Gs from a friend to replace a water damaged android phone. I’ve jailbroken iPod’s in the past, thinking it was similar, I decided to update my 3.1.2 (or 3.1.3) iPhone to 4.2.1…
I’m a meathead, and decided to update the baseband to 6.15 before updating the OS, then tried updating through iTunes and not using sn0wbreeze to create an ipsw that doesn’t check the baseband version.
So right now I’m stuck at the recovery screen on the phone, and can’t update or restore. iTunes just throws out this error message The iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1015)
Is there anything that can be done?

You need a custom 4.2.1 made with pwnage tool

Thanks for the reply. I tried making a custom 4.1 with sn0wbreeze which didn't work. Are you saying this will work better? I don't have a mac, but if I get a hold of one, will it be fairly quick to do? Easy instructions I hope, I know how to put it in DFU mode, I hope there isn't much more to it than that lol

Thanks for your help! Just one last question... Does it matter how my iPhone was jailbroken? I sent a message to the person who originally to find out if he used spirit or not, cause I heard from someone that it may make a difference.
Thanks for everything,
James

I lied, I have one last question after the last question which wasn't the last question after all...
What are the steps to update once I have the update? I'm sorry for the questions, I actually did do a search but couldn't find anything relevant to my situation. Do I just update through iTunes or do I need some tool?

You need to use redsnow or ireb to put the phone into pwned dfu. Then open itunes and shift-click restore to the custom 4.2.1.

You can restore to stock 4.1 if you have 4.1 shsh blogs or restore to custom firmware of 4.2.1 created by Pwnage tools 4.1.3 ( you have to add the 3gs bundle yourself)

I think I am in the same boat. I am stuck at the boot logo with an old bootrom, 3gs. redsn0w pwn and tethered mode doesn't help. If someone could send me a custom 4.2.1 ipsw I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

I can't get into normal DFU mode to even restore. It just stays on the boot logo screen.
Thanks for the help.

Are you sure ?
Then you can use redsn0w to help you to go into DFU mode

For some reason, it is sticking in the boot logo screen. I hold power and home, then release power. And it just keeps getting stuck on the boot logo screen. I have even tried a normal restore back to original through itunes and it errors.

How are you trying to get into dfu? from apple logo the process should be: plug in iphone, hold power and home button for exactly 10 seconds, then release power button and keep holding home for an additional 10 seconds. Screen should stay black.

That is what I am doing, but it just goes back to the boot logo. I was able to get to the "boot tethered now" but it sits at the pineapple logo with the white wheel on it. The screen gets a little bit brighter for about a half a second, but then just sits there. How can I just get it back to normal. I have tried everything. If someone knows, I will pm you my home telephone number to see if you can guide me through this. I have jailbroken many times, but I can't get this one to work.
Thanks
I can enter dfu mode through redsn0w. But I get errors restoring. Can't even restore to original.Last edited by spwwright; 12-04-2010 at 02:27 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

It starts to restore, then gets to the pineapple logo (the gray one that I custom loaded) and then gives the error 1646.
