Have to restore iPhone 4, is 4.2 worth it?
So after a slight accident involving iLocalis, iTunes is giving me the dreaded error 0xe8000022 whenever I try to sync. So it seems I have to restore. I had been holding off for an untethered jailbreak, but I wonder if I should just go for 4.2.1 now.
My main question is, once I install redsn0w, will my phone always be tethered? Or will I always be able to untether my jailbreak with a simple downgrade to 4.1 (don't worry, I have all my SHSH blobs
).
Assuming that won't be an issue, might it even be an advantage? That is, when an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak comes out, will the redsn0w early adopters have a head start in switching to it, or will they have to do a firmware restore like everyone else?

If you have 4.1 SHSH then you can always go back and have a untethered jailbreak. Not sure if people on 4.2.1 tethered will have a short cut to being untethered though. We will have to wait and see what the dev team comes up with.

Thanks. I think I'm going to restore to 4.1, leave well enough alone. Could someone remind me though, do I have to first restore to the official Apple 4.1, and only then restore my custom ipsw from PwnageTool? Or can I go straight to the custom ipsw? I have a vague memory about running into trouble over this, though it might have been with limera1n or greenpois0n.

You can restore to stock 4.1 and jailbreak with Limera1n. It should work on Iphone 4.

So I can't restore to the 4.1 ipsw I already made? It's mostly superstition, but I just tend to trust the Dev Team's releases to be more solid than geohot's.

Use tinyumbrella to restore to stock 4.1. Id do this first to clear up any bugs. Then choose how you want to jb. I am always happy with pwnagetool and redsnow results. That my opinion.

Ya I prefer pwnage tool or redsnow, but have used limera1n as well and not had any issues.
