OMG help!

i have a 3g jb/unlocked at 3.1.2/05.11.07 on tmoble.
this is my wifes phone, she added unlimited text to our account.
it seems that the text is working but there is no icon for the camera and when i go to the message setting there is only "show preview" and "report alert" nothing else. i tried to open cydia to look for a fix but cydia starts loading data and then goes back to the home screen. I assume i need to start over which is fine but now i am confused as to what would be the best way to start over.
here is the questions and PLEASE offer suggestions.
should i upgrade and if i should which software should i use with the upgrade?
I want the phone stable and of course i want my wife to be able to use all of the messaging features.
I have been reading but now everything is running together.
any and all help would be great.

You can always restore to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 again. Download the stock file and shift key + restore (ITUNES) to 3.1.3 IPSW for speed and performance.

Don't go for 4.0 or higher, if she doesn't need it. Too much hassle if you don't know what you are doing and will probably end up locking up your iphone.

thanks, i was looking at the 4.0 file but i was also still reading on the best direction to take. I will follow the link and read up before restoring. thanks again.
