Please help iPh 3g

I have an iPhone 3g with iOS 4.1 that I tried to jailbreak with limera1n and got stuck in recovery mode. I finally got it out of recovery (I think) and all i have on the screen is the plug pointing to the itunes symbol. The phone won't do anything else. I have read to use redsn0w to put in dfu manually and browse for the 4.1 firmware, but I do not have that. If I am on not on the right track can some one help please.

If you have 4.1 shsh blogs then you can restore to 4.1 again.
Run tiny umbrella.
If you have used TU to save your shsh blogs, then you will see your device name on the left side. If not, then you have to retrieve your ECID and manually input it into TU.
Use idetector to see your ECID, once you have input the ECID, click save shsh to download your already stored 4.1 shsh from Cydia. If Cydia doesn't have it, then you can't restore to 4.1 anymore. (you have to go with Custom firmware of 4.1)
If you have the 4.1 shsh blogs, highlight it.
Now run redsn0w 0.9.6b5 and browse to stock 4.1.
Check only the box : DFU mode only.
Start Tss Server, you can tap log to see the progress, it should say connecting.
Now open up itunes : Shift + restore to stock 4.1 ipsw.
Once restored, if you have an official sim to activate, do that.
Now you are at Home Screen.
Run Redsn0w again and browse to stock 4.1 ipsw
Jailbreak your 3g.

I appreciate it. I am new to all this stuff so I might be askig for more help. I am downloading tiny umbrella and going to be googling idetector so Ill see how it goes.

Good news is that I have the 3g out of recovery and it still has the 4.1 firmware on it. TO finish the jailbreak do I still have to go through all the steps you advised me to do or is there another way since I still have the firmware installed? Also this phone is not in use. I have a Iphone 4 and im trying to JB the 3g to sell it. I have the sim card in it but no service. Does that matter?

I did as you said and at first I had trouble with it cause the file that contained the firmware was in .zip form. I had to research for hours to finally find out that I had to rename it to a .ipsw for redsn0w to recognize. The phone is jailbroke. Now I need to find out if I can unlock it.

Check your bb, if it is 05.14 or 05.15 , then to get it unlock , you have to update your bb to ipad bb using redsn0w 0.9.6b5.

Update to ipad bb should be used as a last resort.

If your 4.1 is not jailbroken , you can jailbreak it with redsn0w by install cydia.

I finally jailroke it this morning. I had a hard time with it cause like I said, I didn't know I had to change the firmware file from .zip and rename it to .ipsw for redsn0w to see it. Its good to go.

Download redsn0w 0.9.6b6 and update to ipad bb, unlock with Ultrasn0w.

Well the final outcome on my project is a success. I got the phone jailbroken and unlock. Thanks for the advice.
