Simple?
Ok I have read the dev team blog and still confused.
I have a 3gs with 4.1 and 5.13.04 old baseband, jailbroken and unlocked ( on t-mobile usa )
What is the simplest way to up it to 4.2.1?
I do not want to update the baseband just the os.
Thanks

You need to use pwnage tool, add the 4.2.1 bundle detailed in update 3 to it then make a custom 4.2.1 without the baseband update in it. Make sure you have old bootrom first though or it will be a tethered jailbreak.

You only need to use redsnow to add cydia after you install the custom firmware. Only use the activate phone thing if you do not have a official sim to activate with.

Uncheck activate then. After the custom restore put the ATT sim in the phone and have itunes get you past the emergency call screen. Then you can use redsnow 0.9.6b5 to install cydia.

Ya but this is a minimum bundle as stated in update 3 on the dev team blog. It will not install cydia.

Yes I do have the old bootrom. Why do I have to use pwange tool? can't I just use redsnow and skip the whole pwange tool thing?
iYeow I would like if I could use your custom firmware, is cydia all ready in it. I would just use itunes to restore it????

This custom firmware will just basically restore your iphone to 4.2.1 and not touch your baseband.
Once restored, it will be in emergency screen, put in your official sim to activate, if you don't have one, you can just run redsn0w : check the box : install cydia.
Redsn0w will hactivate at emergency screen, but you are not going to have your Youtube working and probably some others , not to sure.
I always activate mine thru official sim.
It is always good to have the official sim card with you.
Just to let you know, my old bootrom is now jailbroken and unlocked at 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak with a BB of 05.11.07.
