i have a new bootrom 3gs, running 3.1.1 and bb 05.12

Can my friend with a mac and use pwonage tool to create a cooked ipsw that wont update the bb but take me to 4.1 on my windows machine? (he lives in Vancouver, i am in TO)

Yeah you can but before you update. Run redsn0w and choose to put device into dfu then proceed to update

+1. Using redsn0w (or PwnageTool, and iRecivery too I think) to enter DFU is a new requirement. Something about injecting special USB code to bypass an iTunes error.
