Jailbreaking Problem... could use some help!

Trying to jailbreak and download the 4.0 software on my friends Iphone 3G using this guide How to Jailbreak 4.0 iPhone 3G/iPod Touch 2g on OS X/Windows He currently has the 3.1.2 software (05.11.07 baseband) on it that we just restored because it was freezing a lot. We restored that and now its locked again and is showing only the emergency call screen. I used the guide to jailbreak and it said I did everything right and we got to the screen where it says Downloading Jailbreak Data.

It then restarted but the problem is it did nothing. I am back at the emergency call screen and it still says its running the 3.1.2 software. I am currently doing the 4.0 jailbreak process all over again, but if it doesnt work is there something I am doing wrong? Is there another guide I should follow to jailbreak and unlock the phone for the 4.0 software or higher. He is using Tmobile so unlock is a must. Thanks you for the help!

You need an official sim to trigger and try Limera1n to jailbreak from Emergency Screen.

What happens after downloading jailbreak data ? Does it hang? If yes run it with xp compatibility option set. It sounds like it doesn't finish. After uplifting it should run the actual modifications

forget that, use Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 to jailbreak, not limera1n , sorry i misread.

Okay so now I am using Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 to jailbreak and then unlock? Is there a guide on where to download Redsn0w 0.9.6b2? Ill just then use Cydia to unlock right? Thanks

Why do you want 4.0 on 3g, you will definitely wants to downgrade or upgradet to 4.1. 4.0 is too buggy, slow and freezes your iphone.
To upgrade to 4.1, while preserving your baseband this is what you do :
Run Redsn0w to put you into dfu mode , and open up itunes and shift + restore to custom firmware of 4.1 created by Pwnage tools of 4.1.2

It basically shows the jailbreaking screen for at least 5 minutes and then restarts and goes back to the emergency call screen.

That sounds fine to me... which Redsnow do I run? Is there a bunch of them? I would much rather have 4.1 if thats an option. Is there a guide that will lead me through this and show me how to create a custom firmware?

Ok , i have a copy of cfw of 4.1.
You must have itunes atleast 9.2 to 10 is fine
Download redsn0w 0.9.6b5 and browse to stock 4.1 ipsw
Check only the box DFU mode only
Once dfu is done , open up itunes and shift + restore to this 4.1 custom ipsw ( it will be in your PM box)

But where do I download redsn0w 0.9.6b5 for mac? The redsnow I have right now will not just let me put the phone into DFU mode. It first asks for me to browse for a corresponding ISPW???

Can anybody help answer this last step? I don't mean to be impatient but he has been without a phone for a while now and we are trying to figure this out. Basically what I have got is the custom firmware of 4.1 that iYeow sent me. I asked him if I could just put the phone into DFU mode manually by holding the buttons and then going into ITunes and loading the custom firmware he sent me, but he said thats not the way to go.

I have a Mac and have no idea where to go to get redsn0w 0.9.6b5 like he suggested. Can anyone help? I have to be somewhere soon and wanted to get this done or I wouldnt be asking again. Sorry again.

Download Redsn0w 0.9.6b5 (Mac or Pc version) ,you browse to stock 4.1 ipsw . When DFU is done, Alt/Shift + restore to this file.
