Default 3G Jailbrake & Unlock Questions

I could use a little help and advice. I have an iPhone 3G running 3.1.3 (7E18) and modem firmware 05.12.01-5.9_M3S2. I have jailbroken the phone using Jailbrakeme.com then unlocked the phone using ultrasn0w.
I would like to upgrade the ios to the newer 4 ios but want to continue to have the phone unlocked. I want to be able to run some of the applications that will only run in ios 4.
    Can anyone tell me:
    1) Which of the ios 4 firmware’s is the safest and surest for me to update to and still have a jailbroken and unlocked device?
    2) The simplest and easiest way to do the upgrade on a Windows PC?

I have installed VMware and can run OS X Leopard if necessary.

Make a custom 4.2.1 with pwnage tool 4.1.3 (do not do the ipad baseband thing). Use redsn0w 0.9.6b5 to put it in pwned dfu then restore to that custom firmware you made in itunes. Tehn you can use ultrasn0w to unlock again after as it will preserve your baseband.

X98car, he cannot run redsn0w because he has to point to 4.1 stock and he is now at 3.1.3 otherwise it will show a ramdisk failure, I think.

Hmmm... are you sure Yeow? I am pretty sure I have used redsn0w to put a 3.1.3 iphone into pwned dfu and restored to a higher firmware no problem.

I know , i have been asking then to browse to 4.1, maybe it should work. But according to redsn0w , when redsn0w came out for 4.1, 3g users could jailbreak at 4.1 but no umlock, meaning you have to be at 4.1 before you can apply this redsn0w.

Maybe you could get away by just putting it to pwned DFU, we will go with that for now and see what happens.

You may be right. I would normally say to use pwnage tool to do the pwned dfu but am unsure if it will work doing this from vmware.

I remember there is this op , Jesbian, he was having trouble uploading Ramdisk on his friend, i overlook this point and didn't give him an answer while he was stucked. Now , I am not sure if he has fixed it.

Is there a newer 3gs bundle to create IOS 4.2.1 for new bootrom, the bundle i have to create 3gs works on my old bootrom, but when the members use it, it gets error 3194 on the CFW 4.2.1. My old bootrom works like a charm

You should be able to use the same custom firmware regardless of if it is old or new bootrom. New boot will need to run redsn0w to boot tethered after though.

I tried what x98car suggested, I made a custom 4.2.1 with pwnage tool 4.1.3 (did not do the ipad baseband thing). Started redsn0w 0.9.6b5 and pointed it to my custom IPSW but when redsn0w evaluated the file it gave me the following error message; "Unable to recognize specified IPSW.
I don't believe it was a problem with redsn0w because if I pointed it to the original IPSW it recognized it.
Maybe it's the VMware and the OS X Leopard causing some kind of corruption?

You always point redsn0w to the regular firmware not the custom. Once you enter pwned dfu with redsnow then you point itunes to the custom firmware to restore.

Ok, sorry to be such a bother but I would really hate to mess this up.

I have another question(s) based on my taking the following steps.
    1) Opened redsn0w
    2) Browsed and selected 4.2.1 IPSW Restore from Apple
    3) Reached Options selection.
Which Options do I need to select. I want Cydia installed and I want the battery indicator but I don't think I want any of the others or do I just uncheck all but "Just enter pwned DFU mode right now"?
If I just enter DFU mode do I then start iTunes and do a shift restore and then select the custom IPSW?

Just enter pwned dfu is what you want, nothing else. Then open itunes and shift restore to your custom firmware that you made.

Success, I used VMware Workstation and ran OS X Leopard on the virtual machine. Then installed pwnage tool 4.1.3 and created a custom IPSW from the official 4.2.1 IPSW which I saved onto my Windows 7 drive.
Then I ran redsn0w 0.9.6b5 put my iPhone into DFU mode fired up iTunes and installed the custom IPSW.
All went well and the phone booted up jailbroken. I then went to Cydia and installed Ultrasn0w and unlocked the phone.
Thanks for all the help and I hope this will help any others with the same issues.
