Questions about UPgrading to iOS 4.1 and restoring backup
Hello, this is my first post. This looks like the place where I will probably get an answer to my questions. I did do a Google site search and came up with nothing relevant.
I recently got an iPod Touch 3G through the student discount program. It comes with 3.1.3 and I have been hesitant to upgrade the OS to 4.1 until a stable jailbreak was released. Unfortunately, by the time I got it, it was too late to back up SHSH hashes for 3.1.3 so I have just been waiting. Now that there are several jailbreak options for 4.1, I want to upgrade to it so I can install some apps that require that version. The current version is 4.2.1 but jailbreak is not really finalized yet. I have saved 4.1 SHSHs using TinyUmbrella and downloaded the 4.1 .ipsw directly from Apple. I have never done a restore so I'm not sure about how backups work. My understanding is that normally you have the option to do a restore from iTunes and then restore a saved backup to get back all settings and audio, video, apps, etc. data. Can someone please verify this for me? I have never done it. My question is, can I do a "restore" (really an ugrade) to 4.1 using TinyUmbrella and then restore a backup in iTunes in the usual manner (step 9 of "Restoring your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch" at iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch software)? I will at some point do a jailbreak but I don't have time now to deal with possible ensuing problems so I just want to upgrade for the moment.
