Does anyone know where I can find a custom ipsw for:
- iPhone 3G
- Baseband 6.15.0
- iOS 4.2.1
- needs activation - locked to O2(UK) and I don't have a SIM from them.

Here is the link who needs a custom firmware without baseband upgrade is here.
GUAR FORUM BLOG - Best Informed Blog in iDevices and GSM: iphone 3G 4.2.1 Custom firmware without BB update
Note: when u upgrade your i-phone version to 4.2.1 baseband 6.15.00 and after u downgrade version 3.0 or any version. when u try to restore 4.2.1 1015 error came and u cant upgrade it. so download this fm without baseband update and solve problem.

Great post, nice and simple. But it's not working out for me.
I have an iPhone 3G, originally was 3.1.3, 05.14.02: I followed instructions and successfully restored to stock 4.2.1 using iTunes, then jailbroke with redsn0w and unlocked with ultrasn0w.
However, I found it was slow and buggy, and I decided to try and downgrade. I used iTunes to restore to 3.1.3 IPSW I downloaded from iClarified - iPhone - Where To Download iPhone Firmware Files From
Got error 1015. Now it's stuck in Emergency Mode.
It's from this point that I'm trying to get it back up and running, but no matter what method I use, even with TSS server and IPSW 4.1, TinyUmbrella still shows 3.1.3. Am I fukked?

--Question: Has anyone managed to get their 3G or 3GS to boot past the recovery screen under the following conditions:
1) Is on iOS 4.2.1 (8C148 or 8C148a)?
2) Has baseband version 06.15.00?
3) Restored with either a stock firmware or a custom one to iOS 4.2.1, not upgraded?
4) Got a 10xx error, but was able to bypass it with recboot, iRecovery, TinyUmbrella, etc. after restoring and having the mismatched baseband on the device?
Because all I've heard thus far is nobody has been able to follow those conditionals and end up with a working iPhone... Thanks in advance, y'all.

x98car - You're a freakin lifesaver you know that?
Ok - here's the deal - somehow when I checked TinyUmbrella again, it seems to have worked in updating the firmware to 4.1. I guess I just had to re-check.
So now, just so I understand, I have two options:
- downgrade to 3.1.2 (Why not 3.1.3?) and use redsn0w 0.9.4
- stick with 4.1 (NOT 4.1.2) and use redsn0w 0.9.6b6
Am I right?
I guess I can't use the 'latest' firmware, which is kind of too bad seeing as I *had* it running 4.2.1, but also not that bad since the thing was really buggy, crazy slow.
One question I have is: Do I ever have to use custom firmware on a 3G, as suggested by this thread: [How To] Check if you can Unlock
Or is it only for 3GS devices?
So last question (hopefully) - which would you do? Stick with 4.1?

Ya you can do either. You have the right versions of redsnow needed depending on what firmware you want to stay at. The choice is yours, 3.1.3 will run a little faster, 4.1 will have a few extra features.

I'd hang with 4.1 for the features myself, but that's just me.
You indeed have those two options, and either will work swimmingly. Your choice. 4.1 has more features, more applications available for it, and is relatively stable. 3.1.2, however, is faster and probably better on battery life at the cost of fewer features and application choice/compatibility.
The custom-firmware requirement only applies to iOS 4.2.1 and greater, so you won't be affected.

@orb the only people I have heard being able to boot on 4.2.1 after getting that error are people on iPhone 4 that have updated, not restored. Only custom firmware with no baseband in it have people bypassing that 10xx error for 3G and 3GS.

At this point, my questions are merely of curiosity and I hate bugging the forum about it, but...
1. What is custom firmware actually?
2. Why can't I install 3.1.3 firmware?
3. Is there any way I can install 4.2.1 firmware?
