You wont be able to install the regular 4.2 now that you have the ipad baseband. you will always get the 1015 error. You have to restore to a 4.2.1 custom firmware made with pwnage tool. Do not add the iPad baseband to the custom firmware, there should be no baseband update. After restoring to the custom 4.2.1 that is when you jailbreak with redsn0w (pointing to the stock 4.2.1). After you do that and it boots up, if cydia is white and it wont open then you need to use redsn0w again to boot tethered.

So the steps that I'm suppose to do is this?
1. Restore the phone to the custom 4.2.1 IPSW using iTunes.
2. Jailbreak the phone using Redsn0w with the custom 4.2.1 IPSW but not
to select the ipad baseband.
3. Reboot it again with Redsn0w because of Cydia problem.

1. Yes
2. No, when running redsnow you always browse for the regular firmare not the custom
3. You only have to do this if you have a new bootrom 3GS

hey all.
i'm in the same boat with my 3G
i installed 4.2.1 with ipad baseband and ultrasn0w unlock. i had problems.
i tried to restore 4.2.1 stock firmware via itunes (dumb idea. i know)
i am now stuck in restore mode no matter what
i put 4.1 on via redsnow using stock ipsw. still boots to restore
used the latest redsnow to boot tethered. i get the pineapple logo but boots to restore.
i used tiny umbrella to exit restore.
still boots to restore.
iREB gives me the green screen and says i can load a custom IPSW.
i'm on pc.
what else can i do?
any help will be greatly appreciated.Last edited by fucdemas; 12-02-2010 at 04:07 PM. Reason: forgot to mention model

i did!
1) as i was certain cydia has my blobs from 4.1 however i got error 21 and it couldn't install.
i'm assuming that tiny umbrella does what saurik explains to do here: Caching Apple's Signature Server - Jay Freeman (saurik) i did not follow his steps here. i just ran the tss server with in Tiny Umbrella
2) installing 3.1.3 gave me error 1015. exited recovery from tiny umbrella and.... i get the emergency call screen!
oh thank you!
this is a great sign.
first: so sorry but i swear i did everything in the first post the first time. glad i went through and did it again na dpaid extra attention!
x98car you can call me a jackass. i deserve it.
-----
activation: am i activated? i'm past the emergency call screen and into the ios interface proper. my sim is no longer active but is a legit at&t sim
to unlock do i need to go back up to 4.2.1 since i have the ipad BB 06.15.00
thanks again

I wouldnt call you that

You dont have to go back to 4.2.1 to unlock, just install ultrasn0w on 3.1.3. It is the best firmware IMO for a iPhone 3G anyway.

You need to add the 4.2.1 bundle from update 3 on the dev team blog for it to recognize it.

You need to right click on pwnage tool and show package contents, then drop it in the right folder, it is all explained in update 3

Download the bundle from dev team blog.
Right click on pwnage tool and choose show package contents (you can right-click by holding down control and clicking)
Go to Contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles
Drop the bundle you downloaded in there
Open pwnage and proceed to make custom firmware

XCar...
I respectfully disagree with option 4's viability.
I had someone (a poster in this thread) restore a 3G (not a 3GS, granted) to a custom version of iOS 4.2.1 with the iPad baseband I cooked up myself and could not bypass the Recovery mode that followed with TinyUmbrella.
(P.S.: Apologies to that poster I worked with early this morning, you know who you are. The 3.1.3 method never occurred to me, it should work, but you'll lose all the 4.x features).
Conversely, I saw a user post (with proof) that they had an iPhone 4 on stock 4.2.1 with the 4.1 baseband. The user said they had an altered hosts file due to running TinyUmbrella under its defaults but did not use the TSS server nor did they do a restore (rather, they did an upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2.1).
I have a sneaking suspicion where this check is now, but I need a seriously skilled hacker to double-check (for I can't reverse the two places I think it could be myself).
Sorry to bust in here, carry on sir.

Hey orb,
For the custom firmware to work it has to be obe without the ipad baseband in it. I have helped a few people with 3G and 3GS where they could restore using a custom 4.2.1 as long as there was no baseband update in it.
As for the iPhone 4 thing I have seen mentions of that too on semaphore/notcom twitter of being able to preserve baseband when updating and not restoring. So the baseband check must not be present when updating. Not sure if this applies to 3G/3GS though.
it's control-click

Has this been stickied yet? I wanna sticky it because I've been answering a lot of error 1015 questions and I get nowhere with my solutions. If not, let me know so I can sticky it, easily find it and link it to people. Sorry I can't browse well on my iPhone, that's why I ask.
