3gs old bootrom question

I have a 3gs old boot rom jailbroken and unlocked with saves sshh's using TU. I am on 4.1 and would like to go to 4.2.1 and keep my unlock but I do not want to be tethered.

Can this be done?

I don't want to hook up my phone to the mac every time I reboot it or kill the battery.

Like I said it's a old bootrom.

Do I use redsnow or pawngtool?

Yes, you can use Pwnage tools 4.1.3 to restore your 3gs to 4.2.1, use Redsn0w 0.9.6 b5 to install Cydia.
Unlock with Ultrasn0w

Do I have to update the baseband to 6.15 (iPad version)? To keep my unlock for tmobile.

Oh, I missed the part that you are already at 4.1, so your bb is now 05.14.xx, am i right ?

If you already have this non unlockable baseband , and you want 4.2.1, restore to stock 4.2.1.
Run redsn0w 0.9.6b5 and browse to stock 4.2.1 , check the box : install Cydia, install BB ipad update and finished jailbreaking it.
Now unlock with Ultrasn0w from Cydia.

Then go with Pwnage tools to get you to 4.2.1 to preserve your baseband. Once you are at 4.2.1 with 05.13.xx bb, run redsn0w 0.9.6b5 to install Cydia. Unlock with Ultrasn0w.
Usually when you restore to custom firmware by Pwnage tools , once restored you are already jailbroken but in this case it will not jailbreak it for you only preserve your 05.13.xx and at iOS 4.2.1.
This will help you add the 3gs bundle to make Pwnage tools 4.1.3 to be able to recognize your stock 4.2.1 fw.

As long as it is jailbroken, unlocked and not tethered it should be fine.

Why do you want to ruin your already preserved BB of 05.13.xx which is unlockable.
Yes, the baseband of 6.15 can also be unlockable .
If i were you , I would restore to 4.2.1 via Pwnage tools.
run redsn0w just to install cydia.
Unlock with Ultrasn0w.

I thought I read on redmonpie that 4.2.1 have a built-in baseband checker that you had to update the baseband to 6.15

I tried running pwnage with 4.2.1 to make a custom Ipsw file and I got an error trying to read 4.2.1.

Not for 3gs, it doesn't have a ipad baseband update when using Pwnage tools 4.1.3, only 3g.

Ok, i am now uploading the pwnage tools with 3gs bundle attached. I will give you the link and you can use it to create one yourself with Vmware or Mac.

It is up to you, 05.13 and 6.15 are both unlockable. If you don't want to preserve your 05.13 by restoring to CFW, then go ahead an update your BB, no regrets , alright.

I think you are a little confused there. Do NOT screw up your baseband if you don't have to.

Use PwnageTool 4.1.3 to cook a Custom ipsw that preserves your 5.13.04 baseband. Be sure to read BOTH "Update 1" and "Update 3" on the Dev Team blog and do the fix (Update 1) to the minimal package (Update 3). Once the Custom ipsw is made, Launch iTunes and RESTORE to the Custom ipsw you just made. Once that is finished, launch Redsn0w to actually JailBreak. Restoring to the Custom, baseband preserving, ipsw that you make in Pwnagetool DOES NOT jailbreak. You must run Redsn0w for the Jailbreak... and when selecting the ipsw to use within Redsn0w, select the original ipsw that you started the Pwnagetool upgrade to 4.2.1 process with, NOT your custom ipsw.

Since I am having trouble with pwangtool cooking the custom ipsw file and my phone works fine on 4.1 with bb 5.13.04 I am going to wait till the dev team puts out and updated pwange tool unless someone can give me a copy of there ipsw for a 3gs old boot rom that I can just drop into itunes. I don't want to screw things up.
