Currently there is only a Tethered jailbreak for ios 4.2.1.

Comex of Spirit and JailbreakMe fame has confirmed that a more efficient userland-based untethered jailbreak method for iOS 4.2.1 will be released before Christmas 2010. This confirmation in fact came before MuscleNerd got a backup method to make jailbreak untethered on iOS 4.2.1.

Haha... good one. I figured that much out... I'm just being impatient, I guess. I just lost my jailbreak after my springboard crashed and didn't want to boot up. This better be made in time for Christmas... it'd be an awesome gift!

I hear ya... I've never jailbroken before and I'm waiting for the untethered. I upgraded to 4.2.1 before I knew what SHSH blobs were, and it's worth it to wait in my opinion.

It should be here by Christmas, as evidenced by tweets from the devs. So, before 12-25.

There is a backup plan even if the primary from comex doesn't come out, but you'd need 4.2b3 hashes.

Earlier this month, @comex had promised a untethered jailbreak by Christmas in a tweet. Soon thereafter, @MuscleNerd showed off a video of just such a jailbreak that used "mysterious 4.2b3 hashes Cydia kept for you." In a tweet announcing the video, @MuscleNerd called it a "backup plan" to the more extensible jailbreak @comex is working on.

Depends on what blobs cydia saved for you. Download tinyumbrella now and see if you can pull 4.1. TU is just a way manually save the blobs that cydia has saved, along with a way to use those blobs to downgrade. iSHSHit on Cydia will also let you pull and save your blobs.
