4.2.1 question

Wondering if someone could help me out. I have a 3GS on 3.1 with baseband 05.11.07-6.4_M3S2 with the new bootrom. I want to get it to the highest firmware that is still unlockable. If I understand correctly, ultrasn0w works fine on all firmwares as long as I don't update my baseband. I'm trying to use pwnage tool 4.1.3 but it doesn't recognize the 4.2.1 firmware.

I see a lot of focus right now getting people unlocked at the higher baseband but I don't want to update my baseband.

Anyone out there in the community that could point me in the right direction? I would really appreciate it.

I think Pwnage tools 4.1.3 doesn't not work on 3gs at 4.2.1 yet. Why don't you build a custom firmware of 4.1 from Pwnage tools 4.1.2 and restore to it.

Thanks for the info. That's kind of what I thought might be the case after reading up on it more. I heard there was a speed increase at 4.2.1 and that's why I wasn't too excited about 4.1.2 but maybe that is the route I should take. My jailbreak will be untethered on 4.1.2 right?

Any thoughts? I can definitely wait a little bit more if the advantages of 4.2.1 are more than nominal.

Are you currently at 3.1 and jailbroken wtih Blackra1n. You shouldn't mess it up with 4.2.1.

I am still at IOS 4.1 and I am happy with it. If you want to restore to 4.1 and still be able to unlock , i can get you there.

Do you have a Mac or PC ?

I'm on 3.1 not jailbroken yet. I considered just using blackra1n, I've used that before and had great success and it is probably the easiest method I've used, however, I have been using 4.0 on a different phone and love the folders, and multitasking stuff going on.

I'm on a PC but with access to a mac. If I do the following will I be ok?

1. run pwnage 4.1.2 using this firmware iPhone2,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw
2. use iTunes to restore to the custom firmware that pwnage creates
3. download ultrasn0w from cydia once my phone is jb

I just want to make sure there are no suprises like a tethered jailbreak or anything else. I am currently activated with an old official carrier sim.

I will get you to 4.1 and be able to unlock.
This is what you do :
Update itunes to 10
Download Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 and the stock 4.1
Run redsn0w and browse to this stock 4.1
Check only the box, Dfu mode only.
Perform this action until you see a message DFU done.
Now Open up itunes and Shift + restore to custom firmware of 4.1 , the link will be in your PM box.

When you have restored to this CFW 4.1, you can then install Ultrasn0w to unlock. Your baseband remains the same.

Thanks a million. I have been asking around on the dev team blog for anyone who could get me a custom firmware and they must just be too busy right now. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out, I'll do it tonight after work and let you know if I run into any snags.

Yes, it will be active. It is my uploads.

Remember , don't use Redsn0w to jailbreak,just dfu mode in order to open up Geohot's exploit for you to restore to custom firmware.

worked perfectly. Thanks for laying it out so simply and getting me the custom firmware file. Redsn0w was a little funny and it took a second for windows to catch up with it. The DFU wizard said it wasn't connected, windows 7 took about 10 more seconds to install the driver and then when I ran the DFU wizard again it was immediately connected.

Ok, one more question for you. I noticed that my phone was dead this morning with nothing running except wifi connection. I just read somewhere that the hactivation might cause this in 4.1. I do have an original carrier sim so I don't need the hactivation. Can I clear all the settings on the phone forcing a new activation without messing up the jb?

Actually, if I can just turn off Push and that solves the problem, I should be fine. Are you familiar with this problem? Does turning off Push fix it? I'll have to experiment when I get home from work today.
