Using tiny umbrella NOW??????
I'm having trouble using tinyumbrella now. I happened to erase my iphone jus a day before iOS 4.2 release. Now Im stuck in a position where I dont knw if it is a good idea to restore my iphone. I downloaded the firmware iOS 4.1 from a link. but can I restore my iphone to it using itunes saving my baseband??? Would itunes be updating my baseband if I do it?

What firmware and baseband were you on before this happened.

Ok, here's what you can do. Open tiny umbrella, click on advanced, deselect the box that says "set hosts to cydia on exit", then close tiny umbrella. Now open itunes and shift-click restore to the 4.1 firmware you downloaded. You will stay on 4.1 with that baseband.

Yup AFAIK Apple has not stopped signing 4.1 yet. Make sure you put it in dfu before you restore though. I think Apple is still on vacation

Also make sure you have saved your 4.1 SHSH so that you can do this even after Apple has stopped signing 4.1

What is your current situation? Are you stuck on apple logo, or in recovery mode, or are able to boot up normally?

Sure
1: Do what I said above with tiny umbrella
2: Put the iphone in dfu.To do this, plug in your iphone, hold the home and power button for 10 seconds, then release the power button while still holding the home button until itunes recognizes it as being in restore mode (actually it is dfu, you should have a black screen).
3: Hold down shift and click restore, a window will pop up where you can select the 4.1 firmware you downloaded.
4: Let itunes do its thing and restore the iphone.
At this point if you have a official sim activate it with that in itunes.

^There are a bunch of You tube vids out there that may make this easier for you. Seeing it happen is kind of like on-the-job-training.

You get that error when you dont have internet connection or itunes isnt able to reach the apple server. Reboot and try again.
