I am new to jailbreaking and have a few questions about upgrading

Hello and thanks in advance for your help. I have an Iphone 3GS and I performed a jailbreak for the first time with jailbreakme.com I also unlocked it with ultrasnow. I have version 4.0.1. Baseband 5.13.04. I used the option "make my life easier" and through Tinyumbrella I know that I have 4.0, 4.01, 4.02, 4.1, 4.2.1 and 4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved.
Can you please guide me on what to do to update to the latest 4.2 OS with Jailbreak of course and remain unlocked? Thanks again guys.

you will need a custom firmware to update and unlock right now and sn0wbreeze nor pwnagetool have been updated to work with 4.2.1 you can jailbreak it if you were to go up but it would be tethered and you would be locked until ultrasn0w update is out

Hi, I believe I read that ultrasn0w update is going to be out tomorrow. Is it so? And if so, would you say it is better for me to wait, being the fact that I don't know much about jailbreaking, instead of jailbreaking now? Thank you.

i would wait.. it says tomorrow but something may cause it to be postponed.. before i did anything i would wait for the official update to ultrasn0w just to be safe..

and also for the untethered jailbreak.. im sure you dont want to boot your iphone everytime you turn it on by redsn0w.

tethered is something 99.9% of people dont want

Can you please explain what tethered means?

Tethered jailbreak means everytime you power down your device, if you need to power up again, you will need a computer and the software like redsn0w to boot it up.
Example, if you install something thats need a reboot, and you don't have access to a computer, then you will not be able to use your device until you get hold of a computer together with the software to tether boot. It is very inconvenient.

I understand. Suppose I don't need to have my phone unlocked for now. Will I be able eventually to unlock it if I jailbreak to 4.2 right now? If so, what would be the steps: Itunes to 10.1, then upgrade the OS to 4.2 and then run redsn0w 9.6? Thank you as always!
