need some help on 3gs jb asap thanks

got a 3gs with 4.0
need to jb it however i tried using jailbreakme and get invalid file error
its new bootrom and i cant do a restore because theres stuff on it i need ??
can i not use redsnow ?
what other method can i try, response asap thanks all

tried limerain alread screen goes white then restarts. im thinking i just need to do a restore but how can i restore it and keep it on 4.0

it does have 4.1 can and how can i upgrade it to 4.1 and not 4.2

Download the 4.1 firmware and shift-click restore to it in itunes.

You may have to put the phone in dfu or recovery for it to work.
