Iphone 4 / 4,2,1 Unlock questions.
I currently have an Iphone 4 that itunes updated to 4.2.1 the other day. After the update I started reading about jb and found that it was a lot different than I thought. I have been reading about backing up shsh's and downloaded TinyUmbrella and backed up my shsh's.
Now it's showing the following available Saved SHSH's for my phone:
iPhone4 4.1 (8B117)
iPhone4 4.2.1 (8C148)
iPhone4 4.2b3 (8C5115c)
I have never tried jailbreaking before (that I can remember) so how would it have 4.1 SHSH's for me?
I am still pretty new but am reading everything I can.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Today is the first time I ran Tinyumbrella. I looked at the SHSH's and there is one for 4.1 / 4.1.2 / 4.2b3 and they all look identical.
Also, how safe is it to unlock an iphone 4 running 4.1.2? I am interesting in trying all the apps but can't afford a bricked phone.Last edited by nswafford; 11-25-2010 at 04:20 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Yeah, that one :P
So I will need to do a tethered jb? If I have to reboot the iphone away from a PC will it just boot into the normal IOS and work as expected?
Also, what kind of risk does JK'n carry?

jailbreaking really has no risks if you know what your doing in the cydia store some stuff can send your phone into boot loop.. so i would if i was you set my self as graphical when cydia asks.. and yea you will need a tethered jb on 4.2.1 but if i was you i would downgrade to 4.1 then jb that was its untethered and alot more stuff will be usable from cydia

Doesn't downgrading to 4.1 require the shsh hash's?
btw, I see that you are answering stuff for several people in the forum. I really appreciate the help people like yourself provide. Uber kudos!

Why are you worried about how you 4.1 shsh blogs, just take it as been lucky.
If you want to downgrade, i think apple is still signing 4.1, go ahead and downgrade while you can.
Why jump to 4.2.1 which has lots of bugs and 4.3 is on its way, you will have to start all over again if you want to restore to 4.3Last edited by iYeow; 11-25-2010 at 04:36 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I was worried because TinyUmbrella is showing that I have 4.1 shsh's even though I know I never backed them up before I upgraded to 4.2.1. I also opened the 4.1 shsh file and it looks the exact same as the 4.2.1 one. But most of all, I am learning, and have not connected the dots yet :P
What site would you recommend for instructions on downgrading to 4.1?

Even i have a factory unlocked, I am happy with my 4.1, all the themes, Cydia apps and many others is working perfectly without any glitch. I will stay at 4.1 for months to come.

Ok, so even though the SHSH's that TinyUmbrella is showing, are the same size and look identical, I can downgrade to 4.1 and have a non tethered jb?
Again, thanks to both of you for putting up with my ignorance. I am trying :P

You have 4.1 SHSH because Apple is still signing 4.1 right now. SHSH has nothing to do with what firmware you are on and you do not need to be jailbroken to save them. All that matters when saving them is what firmware apple is allowing restores to at that time.

at least your trying hald the people on here want to argue..
but yes if you have the 4.1 shsh's saved which it says you do so you do lol just place phone in dfu
then run tiny umbrella and run the tss server
then open itunes
hit shift and click restore and select the 4.1 firmware
you may get error 1015 if you do just click kick device out recovery on tiny umbrella

With a iPhone 4 it is best not to use tiny umbrella if apple is still signing 4.1 (which they are). Open tiny umbrella, click advanced, deselect "set hosts to cydia on exit" then close tint umbrella. Shift click restore to 4.1 and you will get no error. At that point you can jailbreak.

Since you have 4.1 shsh blogs saved in TU, to downgrade :
Open up TU, plug your device in.
Select your device, select your 4.1 shsh blogs > Start Tss Server.
Put iphone into DFU mode
Do the Shift + restore to 4.1 ipsw.
OR if apple is still signing 4.1 firmware and you want Apple to verify it.
Open up TU, uncheck "set hosts file to cydia on exit."
Close TU
Put iphone into DFU mode
Do the shift + restore to 4.1 ipsw

You wont be able to restore the backup if that backup was from 4.2.1
