3Gs jb, unlock questions

The more I think I know the more confused I get.
I'm on OS X and will need an unlock.

I have an old 3Gs that was never unlocked or JB. The owner upgraded to 4.2 with 5.14.02.
I have been and am waiting for the unlock to be released after the 4.2 release.

-My question is, will that forthcoming unlock be for 4.1 or 4.2 or both??

I've been taking the advice to stay where I am at 4.1 but would love to at least JB it now to prepare for the unlock. Can I use pwnage tool for the jb like shown here at iClarified,

or should I use greenpoison/limerain?

OR.. should I just sit tight and wait for the unlock news which may allow me to just upgrade to 4.2 and unlock?


On a seperate note, I also have a 3G which is at 3.0 and requires an unlock. What OS should I upgrade that to for best performance?

For 3g, shift + restore to 3.1.3 is the best firmware for speed and performance. Jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.4 but browse to 3.1.2 when running redsn0w.
The baseband for 4.1 and 4.2 is the same. If you have shsh blogs for 4.1 , then you can downgrade to stock fw and jailbreak but still no unlock.

Yes you can use pwnage tool to jailbreak on 4.1. Limera1n or greenpoison will work too so it is your choice.

You maybe able to downgrade your 4.2 without shsh blogs by restoring to custom firmware of 4.1 created by pwnage tools 4.1.2 ( using Geohot's exploit )

The baseband is different on 4.1 and 4.2.1. 4.1 is 5.14.02, whilst 4.2.1 is 5.15.04. Although if I had to bet I would say the new unlock should work on both, but that isnt a guarantee so best to stay as low as possible until we know for sure.

I have an opportunity to purchase an iPhone 3Gs for $50. When I hit the button it says iPhone is disabled try again in 40 years(21,250,952 minutes). Is this phone fixable?

I dunno, sounds like it may have an expired beta on it or something.

It could be a stolen and disabled iphone. You can try putting it into recovery mode and do a restore.

WOW, thank you all for the quick help. I was away from the computer for just a while and all these responses.

I made a critical mistake in my original post. My 3Gs is at 4.1 and not 4.2. Sorry for the confusion. I have saved my SHSH but have no idea where they are on my machine. I saw that umbrella can find them when I run it and I assume they are on file with cydia now as well.

For my questions, thanks x98 for seeing past my error and commenting on 4.1. I'll use pwnage tool to jb 4.1 as It's what I already know.
I suppose I'll just stay at 4.1 until the unlock comes out and go to 4.2 once it's tested. Then I can avoid messing up my baseband further.

Can I JB that 3G with pwnagetool instead of redsnow 0.9.4? what version of pwnagetool? Is Redsnow better, does it also install cydia and create custom ispw?

I'm DL 3.1.3 for the 3G now to install it. Do I also need to download 3.1.2 so I can browse to it?

I saw where redsnow asked for the current ipsw last time i tried it. does it also later ask to browse to 3.1.3? it's seems confusing to me, that's why I hoped to use pwnage tool to create 3.1.3 ipsw and install with itunes. like here.

You restore to 3.1.3, when you jailbreak with redsn0w , you browse to 3.1.2, if you browse to 3.1.3, it will say unrecognized.

The process is very simple, all you need is to hold the button and the next steps kick in and do the rest. Don't bother about pwnage tools.

sorry to be so dense but,
do I need to DL both 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 to use redsnow? Does the restore to 3.1.3 occur in itunes? Does it install cydia? will it preserve my current 3.0 unlock or do I re unlock with cydia afterwards.

Why not use pwnagetool? just more complicated? harder to get into dfu? too corny graphics?

I did find a DL for pwnage 3.1.5 here,

at that link they say to use redsnow 0.9.4 unless you needed an unlock in which case use pwnage. I do need an unlock and it's my wifes phone and she'll kill me if I mess it up for any period of time.

Unless, you want to have custom boot and recovery images, make a bigger primary partition and package custom sources, you don't have to use pwnage tools. You can jailbreak at 3.1.3 with redsn0w and unlock it now and take your time to build one.
Once you have this custom firmware, if you want to restore , all you have to do is put your iphone into recovery mode and shift/alt/option + restore to this CFW of 3.1.3 created by Pwnage tools 3.1.5
