3g jb on 3.1.2 05.12.01 baseband What to do

friend has his 3g jb on 3.1.2 with 5.12.01 baseband. ITS NOT UNLOCKED YET. We've read numerous post and are more confused then ever. He would like to update to some newer software but are not sure as what would be the best version.

We hear 4.0 is slow and people say we should upgrade to a more updated software. Of course we want to stay away from 4.2.1 but whats his best move.

He will need to unlock it shortly so I guess we're asking whats the best software version to be at with the 3g and still unlockable.

4.0 seriously sucks on a 3G. You can obtain the same functionality with jailbreak apps without losing performance. To unlock simply install ultrasn0w from Cydia.

To get to 4.1, restore to custom firmware of 4.1 created by Pwnage tools 4.1.2. You have to follow closely the instructions on the DFU mode to be able to successfully restore to cfw of 4.1

Your baseband will be preserved so as to be able to unlock with Ultrssn0w.

If you don't have a Mac, only PC:
Run Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 and browse to stock 4.1 ipsw
Check only the box " DFU mode only"
Perform your DFU and it will say
DFU done.
Open up the latest itunes
Do a shift + restore to custom firmware of 4.1

Custom firmware : you can either get it from the net or build one yourself from a mac machine.
