no joy with jailbreak 3GS using redsn0w or limerain

Doing a 3GS device @ 4.1 FW 5.14.02, I get redsn0w 0.9.6b3 to run to completion and when I reboot at the end, nothing changed. Looks like no jailbreak occurred. (At least not that I can tell)
At one point during redsn0w it wants to reboot DFU and upload ramdisk, etc. which it looks like it's doing, but I don't see Cydia install, or anything changing.

Tried Limera1n also, and that program gets to recovery mode and reboots, asks you hold the power+home buttons, then release power, and then it just hangs in that state. At this point, the device appears to be stuck in recovery mode loop. (have to use iREB fixer to get it unstuck)

Have no idea what I am doing wrong here, but so far nothing is working. Does anyone have any advise on what I might try next?

Do a fresh restore to stock 4.1 ipsw & use limera1n again & don't use redsn0w

Thank you for the reply iYeow. I tried the 4.1 ipsw from iClarify, but gets error from itunes about incompatible with firmware, so no way to reload. I had posted a thread about that issue, but can you suggest an alternate ipsw that I might be able to load into the 3GS. I guess my mistake was letting Apple Update to fw 5.14.02, but I don't recall having a choice. I am between a rock and hard place with this device, only thing I can think of is going trying 4.2. Any ideas?

If it's giving you an incompatible FW error then you didn't download the correct firmware for your specific device. If you try and load a 3G, iPod Touch, iPhone 4, or iPad firmware onto your 3GS it will give you that error message.
