Help with iphone 3g restore/jailbreak

Hi, this is my first post, so apologies if I sound a little dumb!

I've jailbroken a few iphones without an issue but have come across a problem. I bought a 3g off ebay and it wouldn't start past the apple screen.

Currently I am using pwnage tool to get it into DFU mode and have tried restoring with a custom IPSW and also a straight restore through itunes. At the moment it still won't boot past the apple logo.

I suspect that the previous owner messed up a jailbreak, but I thought I'd be able to sort it out.

I don't know what firmware it was running (but I thought a DFU restore would just restore and update in any case). Am I doing something wrong, or have a bought an expensive drink coaster?

Any help would be much appreciated.

If not even a dfu restore to a regular firmware is working then the phone may be shot. Hard to tell without knowing it's history. Have you tried it on a different computer/operating system.

Yes - have tried it on two macs. Both running latest itunes.
I don't mind losing information, and quite frankly I don't mind trying anything as it looks like I have nothing to lose!

I had the exact problem with a 3G, I tried every possible way to reboot with no luck...removed and reinstalled motherboard from battery and TaDa it booted. Not sure why, but it worked.

Have you tried Restore mode instead of DFU mode?
