Creating custom IPSW files.

I have been looking around the internet trying to find out how to make a program for creating custom IPSW files, and I need some help. I mostly understand how the firmware is setup, from enabling native multitasking to the structure of apps, but I have been trying to make a program to make custom firmwares for a long time. Are there any resources about making custom firmwares?

Quite frankly, why would you want to go through the effort and work of building another one, when we already have free ones that work quite well? PwnageTool for Mac and sn0wbreeze for Windows.

I would want to go through the effort because, hell, it seems like fun. I understand that there are two other good ones out there, but why let that get in the way?
