Frozen ipod 1st gen during upgrade

I have searched but can't find the proper answer.

I have a ipod touch 1st gen, it was on 2.2.1, i wanted to upgrade to 3.0 so i got a copy of 3.0 firmware, plugged ipod into itunes, hed the shift key, clicked update and located the firmware file.

All was going ok untill it got right to the end and it seems the ipod has frozen, the ipod display the apple logo with a progress bar which is full, itunes tells me it is updating ipod software.

Its been like this for 20 mins, shall i unplug and try again? what do you suggest please, I don't want to make things worst.

Now put your ipod into recovery mode .
Don't click update, make sure you have itunes 8.2 and above and hit the restore button which will take you to 3.1.3.
You can then jailbreak it with Redsn0w 0.9.4 but browse to 3.1.2 ipsw.

ok i have done that and it says the version to put on will be 2.2.1 again.

I have the 3.1.3 firmware so i will try that rather than 3.0 and see what happens.

No good, its freezing trying to upgrade to 3.1.3

Thanks for your help by the way, Maybe i'm doing something wrong.

Update, put it in recovery mode again, i let itunes download fresh firmware file and its got to the end again and its frozen.

Did you try shift + restore to 3.1.3 ipsw if you have downloaded from the net.

I just remember, Itunes won't let you download the 3.1.3 ipsw for 1st gen ipod touch, you have to pay $10.00.

I did yes and it froze again, the bar didnt get to the end this time either.

Do you have wifi sync installed on your computer.

I have the 3.1.3 firmware file but the progress bar doesn't go to the end with that file, but the 2.2.1 file it goes to the end and freezes

I do have wifi sync installed on here yes, shall I remove it?

FOr future reference why does wifi sync cause a problem?

Uninstall it and you should be able to restore to 3.1.3 by doing shift + restore to 3.1.3

I don't know why, it always gives this problem of not finishing the restore, I discovered it myself when i had a problem too, now I have totally removed it and i am not going to use it.

Ok, uninstalled wifi sync, and itunes is just saying 'waiting for ipod' and the ipod isn't doing anything.

Back to recovery mode and now currently installing 2.2.1 so far so good.

Wifi sync seemed really buggy for me when i was trying to sync over wifi so I had only use it a few times and lost my patience with it keep disconnecting etc

If you are restoring to 2.2.1, i guess you have to use Ziphone jailbreak.

Try to reboot the computer and to shift restore to 3.1.3 after u uninstall wifi sync

And success the iPod is in a working state again on 2.2.1. Thank you so much.

Now, Shall I try and see if I can upgrade to 3.1.3?

How come I have to browse redsn0w to the 3.1.2 firmware and not the 3.1.3 firmware?

When running redsn0w, you have to browse to 3.1.2 not 3.1.3 ipsw

Because redsn0w was built for 3.1.2 but can be used for 3.1.3 jailbreak.

Ok aldone, ipod is rebooting currently on a black screen. Oh the suspense lol

downloading jailbreak data now, think i have done it this time.

Did you restore to the correct file ? Do a hard reset : Hold both buttons until it reboots.
