Which jailbreak is most recommended?

I'm new, so if this has been discussed prior I offer my apologies and simply ask for a link to research the topic, as I haven't been able to find a definitive answer. My google-fu is weak.

I'm running an iPhone 3G on 3.1.3. I've previously used Spirit and redsn0w to jailbreak it, but I recently did a full restore and need to jailbreak it again. What is the most recommended jailbreak for the 3G on 3.1.3? I don't need a carrier unlock, just the jailbreak.

your only options are spirit, jailbreakme, or redsn0w. jailbreakme is by far the easiest although I personally prefer redsn0w, if you will look in the guide section of these forums you will find guides for using all 3, here is a link for you http://modmyi.com/guides/

redsn0w 0.9.4 or jailbreakme.com should both work fine. The choice is yours

Ah, that's right, jailbreakme.com. Forgot about that one. Something about jailbreakme.com doesn't sit well with me and I don't know what it is. =/

With redsn0w I have to DL the 3.1.2 IPSW if memory serves, but with Spirit I do not. Is there any technical reason why one is better than the other? Or is it really just a "pick the name you like better" kinda thing?

for 3.1.3 redsn0w is not really any better than Spirit, I have been using redsn0w for a long time so that is why I prefer it, both were released by the same dev team FWIW

Make sure you have the fixed version of spirit if you have itunes 9.2 or later.

Seeing that you have a Mac, PwnageTool will work for you too. I prefer PwnageTool as it maintains your baseband, allowing carrier unlocking.
