i've got an iphone 3g running 3.0 that i want to jailbreak. should i upgrade to 3.1.3 before jailbreaking? should i upgrade to 4.x? can i jailbreak from the most recent iphone 4.1 version? are there functional advantages to having the newer versions?
how do i upgrade and install to another "newer" version without going to 4.1?
Many 3g users have upgraded to 4.1 and then downgrade back. So go for 3.1.3 for now.
Download the 3g 3.1.3 ipsw from here : iClarified - iPhone - Where To Download iPhone Firmware Files From
onto your desktop
Now press the shift key + restore/update , a box will open up and browse to the 3.1.3 ipsw
Once restored and activated
You can jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.4 but browse to 3.1.2 ipsw.
Unlock with Ultrasn0w from Cydia.
I don't think you will get error 1015, but if you do , use Exit recovery from the feature of tiny umbrella.
When you open up Cydia for the first time, Say Yes to make my life easier, then all future shsh blogs will be saved.

when trying to restore w/shift key, it appears i've gotten the standard restore. i never got a box giving me a choice of software. so now i'm locked out w/ no att sim card. i'm at the emergency call screen. ????
i pressed the shift key then restore and it upgraded to 4.1.
since then i jailbroke w/ redsnow 0.9.6b1- seemed to work
then unlocked w/ cydia- seemed to work
now the phone operates on a 20 sec delay, keeps searching for network and shutting itself on and off
You don't press shift and restore the same time. You press shift key first and then the restore button, it should pop a box.
Do you have fingerprints scanner installed on your laptop ?
Yes you can downgrade your firmware to 3.1.3 by simply putting your iphone into DFU and do the Shift + Restore to 3.1.3 ipsw.
But you cannot unlock your iphone since the baseband has been updated.
