When you are stuck at DFU , you can always do a hard reset to get it out.
Hard reset : Hold both buttons until it reboots.

Hard reset doesn't do anything different from my just pushing the power button. I'm directed to connect to iTunes, which, I assume (?) wld mean sudden death.

This is an iPhone 3G. Never even tells me I am in DFU mode; just has me holding the Home button forever, & to no avail.

    What do I do???

Describe what did you do ? Perhaps a restore is needed.
A hard reset is by holding both buttons, pressing the power button is just turning it off and is not a hard reset.
If you can put iphone into recovery mode , you can do a restore again. ( itunes cable logo )

post some pictures of the errors

and tell us what phone and firmware you are on

it will be less time for us to pinpoint the solution (if there is one) if more information was provided
