Sorry, but I am totally confused...
I have a jailbroken/unlocked 3G on Version 3.1.3(7E18)with modem firmware 05.12.01. I would like to upgrade but not sure how to go about doing that without using iTunes which would place the newest unlockable firmware on my iPhone. I need the unlock for traveling. Can someone point me to a tut that would show me how to upgrade without losing my unlock?
I am sure that this has probably been asked and answered, but my search turned up 100's of threads....
TIA

Check the PDF file named "jailbreak guide 4.1"
Basically, I tell you in the guide you'll probably need to use Sn0wbreeze to preserve your baseband. It'll also tell you the steps to be taken.

If you have a Mac (best/easiest way), use PwnageTool 4.1.2 to create a custom firmware. jb's FW4.1 and preserves the baseband. Then Cydia/ultrasn0w for the unlock.

^4.1 is noticeably faster than 4.0, 4.0.1, or 4.0.2 when you disable Spotlight
Of course 4.1 will be a bit slower than 3.x (more features)
just like 3.x was a bit slower than 2.x (also more features)
Personally, 4.1 on a 3G is OK if you keep the mobile-substrate items to a minimum. This applied to 3.x as well

Thanks for all the help. I am on Win 7 and the main reason I want to upgrade is for MMS. I want to give this 3G to my daughter who is on T-Mob and she really wants MMS and it appears that I have to upgrade to get it..

I wouldn't move up to 4.x on a 3G. It sucks. 3.1.2 is where mine is at again and I won't upgrade it again. It is just a spare phone for when my modifications force a restore on my 3GS.

you say that mms works great on 3.1.3, but when i do not have mms on this phone. When I go into settings, messages there is nothing there for MMS. When i go into my wifes 3G (she is on 4.1) under settings, messages there is a setting for MMS on/off.
If MMS works good on 3.1.3, how do I activate it?

It should be active. Try sending a pic n see if it works w t-mo sim. If it doesnt u may need to go to unlockit.co.nz n set up as t-mo (usa). Then u should have no issues.
