Jailbreak, yes or no?
Hi guys I'm a noob to jailbreaking & all that but I've been reading around alot of the site and it seems I'm seeing more and more people talking about jailbroken iPhones!
I have a 3GS 16gb running 4.0.1 I think...
The question I have is should I jailbreak and why or if not why?
Thanks in advance guys

Yes because it's the right thing to do.

Ever find something that bugs you about the software of your iPhone? Wish that you could bypass the stupid limits that Apple imposes on things, such as 12 icons per folder? Want to customize your iPhone so that it's exactly how you want it?
Welcome to the world of jailbroken iPhones.
You can upgrade to 4.1 and use greenpois0n or limera1n to jailbreak.

Let's put it this way-you like your phone now but jail breaking (jb) it will make you love it. You would be blown away when you see the full potential of the OS.
Don't let the threads about issues deter you. A lot of noobs will NOT ask questions and just start messing around and not paying attention to what they are doing and thus the issues.
Ask a lot of questions and you will have a great experience! This is a VERY helpful site and your questions will get answered.
Think about it!

Do you have time (an the desire) to do a lot more reading and research? Are you interested in any specific app Apple doesn't offer? Is you phone a critical part of your daily activities? Jb'ing offers a lot of interesting capabilities and options, but without knowledge a bit of caution, you can get yourself into a lot of trouble. On the plus side, you can always restore and start again

Remember: Jailbreaking just gives your phone the "Potential" to do extra things. It's what you then do with it ONCE you have JB'ed it, that makes it different.
Perosnally: I just JB'ed mine to quite simply turn off the multitasking. It was FAR, FAR too much to ask for Apple to include an ON/OFF switch in the Settings menu

Yeah I suppose... I watched a some videos on YouTube about jb iPhones and it seems promising the only problem I'm having is... I don't want to break it haha! I'm just a noob to it but I am researching trying to learn so no mistakes will be made.

I know what you mean- I was VERY apprehensive about doing it the first time. This is just because it's the unknown. I've done it a dozen times since.
Keep this in mind:-
Make a full back-up of your device before you JB it.
Then if (a) anything goes wrong, or (b) you just don't fancy having it JB'ed- you can simply do a Restore and use you Backup to put the device back EXACTLY the way it was.
THE MAIN PIECE OF ADVICE I HAVE FOR YOU (VERY IMPORTANT):-
The fact that you are even contemplating JB'ing your advice- you MUST use "Tiny Umbrella" to save your current SHSH Blobs NOW!!!
You don't need to have your device JB'ed to do this- so I encourage you to do it NOW. It doesn't change your device in any way- BUT if you ever want to RESTORE to the firmware version you are on now AFTER Apple have moved up to a newer version. you MUST have the current SHSH Blobs.
Trust me: Capture those Blobs NOW and keep them in a safe place for future use. Apple may release a new firmware version in a matter of days (as they are going to patch a couple of known bugs)- so you need to get Blobs for 4.1 NOW (then you can use Green Pois0n or Lime Ra1n over and over)Last edited by IDN101; 11-01-2010 at 08:55 AM.

^^I'm sure you will
The very best way is to read, read, and read some more.
Among the most important things to know ....
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER allow iTunes to update your iPhone with any standard Apple iOS(FW) unless you are ABSOLUTELY SURE you know what you're doing. Why? Because the baseband (the piece that controls your network (official/non-official carrier) is updated EVERY time Apple releases a new FW! AND unlike the iOS firmware (which can be downgraded), it is impossible to downgrade the baseband.Last edited by Mes; 11-01-2010 at 11:35 AM.

Just do it. There is another whole world out there for you to learn. The Cydia world is another learning curve under your belt. You won't regret it believe me.
