redsn0w 0.9.5b5 not recognizing ipsw

im trying to jailbreak a 3g on 4.0.2 with redsn0w 0.9.5b5 and redsn0w is not recognizing the 4.0 ipsw. i downloaded the 4.0 ipsw from redmond pies guide. Help is much appreciated. Thank you.

What firmware are you at now, 4.0.2 ? Even if you can jailbreak 4.0.2 with Redsn0w 0.9.5 , you will not be getting the phone icon.
What exactly are you trying to do???

can i update to 4.1 with tiny umbrella and preserve the baseband so i can still unlock?

Do you have an official sim, an unused is fine just to trigger it into Home Screen.

Yes, if you use redsn0w 0.9.5 on 4.0.2, you are not going to make any calls.

Try this out, download ireb 4.1 , Snowbreeze 2.0.2 from here : ih8snow.com
You have to download the 3g 4.1 ipsw as well
Now build your custom fw of 4.1 , use expert mode and uncheck the activate my iphone.
It will be place on your desktop and named Snowbreeze_4.1.ipsw
Make sure you have itunes 10.
Plug your iphone in
Run ireb 4.1 and use online mode and follow the instructions.
It will put your iphone into DFU mode
Now do the Shift + Restore to Snowbreez_4.1.ipsw

how exactly should i update to 4.1 without losing the 5.13.04 baseband?

Just follow my instructions, if this doesn't work , I will give you another alternative but don't restore to stock apple 4.1 and you will lose your unlock.

Ok i have downloaded sn0wbreeze 2.0.2 ireb 4.1 now have itunes 10 however have not been able to find 3g 4.1 ipsw

You can try ireb 4.1 to put u into dfu mode , and restore, it

Why did you restore to stock firmware 4.1 on ur 3G, you lost ur unlock

If you are already at stock 4.1 , then Redsn0w 0.9.6b1 or b2 can jailbreak it too.

No the phone in question is a classmates who connected to iTunes and thankfully didn't update. I'm going to follow your directions on his phone later this week with the sn0wbreeze 4.1 firmware. The main iPhone I use is a 3g I bought new from an AT&T store about a year ago and have never updated it and also have never unlocked it however I decided to connect to f0recast and it said that my iPhone is already unlocked. It still has 3.1.2

Ok, so your iphone is still unlockable. You can go ahead and restore to custom firmware. You will need the help of either ireb 4,1 or Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 to put you only into DFU mode.
When you run Redsn0w, you will need the 3g 4.1 ipsw, only check the box that says : Put iphone into dfu mode.
Itunes will then recognize you are in recovery mode and needed a restore, at this point do the shift + restore to custom firmware.
Becareful not to restore to stock 4.1 ipsw and you will be locked out.
