Help with aptbackup !! and update/ jailbreak Please

Ok i want to update tonite to 4.1 and jailbreak my 3gs 4.0.1 and just need to no which order to do the following, ie i have aptbackup and do i sync my iphone 1st with itunes then restore to factory settings and then update to 4.1 and then restore to get my cydia apps back ? or do i just simply update to 4.1 and then restore ?

Sorry to go on and hopefuly somebody can help as at the end of the day i dont want to lose my Cydia Apps

Sync your contacts, photos and everthing with Itunes. You can always sync back your contacts and photos anytime, they are in your computer.
If you use aptbackup, backit up, sync with Itunes, restore your iphone, jailbreak it, install appsbackup , sync with Itunes, restore from Aptbackup.
