What to do?
So, I just got a 3gs from my friend, it's an MB serial, and until recently was still at 3.1.
Like a $&@"&, he updated to 4.0 a few weeks ago. Phone has never been jailbroken, what can I do? I read the guide sticky but I still don't understand what options I have if any.
Any input would be greatly appreciated...

If you want to jailbreak then restore to 4.1 and use limera1n or greenpois0n. If you want to unlock find a friend with a mac and build a custom 4.1 firmware to preserve the baseband and restore to that then download ultrasn0w.
Or if you want to jailbreak it as it sits use jailbreakme.com then download ultrasn0w from Cydia if you need to unlock.Last edited by Poseidon79; 10-26-2010 at 04:23 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Is there any way to find a custom firmware that I can just download? Or is it specific to the phone?

You cannot use the custom firmware of 4.1 made by Pwnage tools on an xp, you need a mac.

If you want to go to 4.1 and keep the unlock , then you will need to have the oldbootrom. What is the first 5 serial number starting from the left.
Do you need an unlock.
If you do need an unlock and you have use jailbreakme at 4.0, then install jbme2pwn from the added repo of Cydia.
Download Snowbreeze 2.0.2 and use Expert mode to uncheck activate my iphone.
Once created , it is on your desktop
Now do the Shift + Restore to Snowbreeze_4.1.ipsw
Once restored, put your official sim in
Unlock with Ultrasn0w.
If you don't need unlock, hit restore in itunes to take you to 4.1
Jailbreak with Limera1n.
Make sure you have the latest itunes too.Last edited by iYeow; 10-26-2010 at 08:06 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

You need to start the restore to custom firmware in a DFU mode initiated in PwnageTool. sn0wbreeze might also be able to get you into that particular DFU mode.
That should be the last hang-up.

Alright, now you are at 4.0 and not jailbroken, try this way first.
Build your custom firmware first and placed it on your desktop.
Now Run ireb 4.1 , online mode, it will help you into DFU mode
You will eventually be in DFU mode
Now Do the Shift + Restore to Snowbreeze_4.1.ipsw.
See it will restore.
If it doesn't , the use kick out of recovery from the feature of tiny umbrella and you will be back to your 4.0.
I will then give you the other approach.
Make sure you have Itunes 10.
You can download ireb and snowbreeze from here : iH8sn0w.com | Jailbreak your iPod touches and iPhonesLast edited by iYeow; 10-26-2010 at 08:59 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I didn't get the two previous posts until just now.
Anyway, Here's what I've done so far. After the failed 4.1 restore I followed the instructions to use jailbreakme.com. It failed the first time but installed cydia on the second try. I then installed ultrasnow inserted my carriers sim and turned off 3g. So, everything is working fine now. What steps should I take next to ensure I can continue to stay jailbroken and unlocked?
I noticed cydia doesn't show a "make my life easier" button.

As long as your iphone doesn't crash and you don't restore to official 4.1, you will stay jailbroken and unlocked.
Now that you are jailbroken at 4.0 by jailbreakme. Try running ireb 4.1 and then shift + restore to custom firmware of 4.1 created by snowbreeze.
It will either restore or not. If it doesn't restore, you will be in recovery mode, use TU to kick it out and you will be back at jailbroken 4.0.
So if you are now at jailbroken 4.0, google search the woowiz repo and install jbme2pwn to make it compatible to use custom firmware. Now you can do a manual DFU mode and restore to Custom firmware of 4.1 by Snowbreeze.
Do you want to give it a try to see if you can get to 4.1Last edited by iYeow; 10-26-2010 at 09:24 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I'll check on the repo tonite and mess with it some more. So to be safe
I should get on a custom firmware so I can restore to it if I need to?
I'm also curious why the jailbreak charts say only if previously pwned when it was actually the simplest jailbreak/unlock I've ever done?Last edited by Effenpig!; 10-26-2010 at 09:37 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Oh yeah, whole lot of difference, a 3g is basically a 2g with added GPS.
3gs is for speed and performance on IOS 4.xx
let us know of your outcome if you want to go to custom firmware of 4.1. Once your iphone is capable of accepting custom firmware, then you can restore as many times as you want with Custom fw.
And your baseband remains the same for unlock.

I went ahead and downloaded tinyumbrella and saved my shsh blobs. Thanks for all the help so far. I'll look into jbme2pwn and custom firmware tomorrow. I would like to be able to restore the phone since my friend had over 600 contacts that are now jumbled with my 250 contacts!!!
