Iphone 2g 3.1.2 firware need to restore and then unlock/jailbreak.

Hi, I am having problem undersrtanding how can i restore my phone. I am having problems with my iphone its keep on crashing everytime i use mail, or safari or any app anyhthing with internet. So i saw on the posts suggesting to restore.

To restore I was doing this - Shift and clicking on restore - I beleive this way you can restore to 3.1.2. But I downloaded the fw 3.1.2 from here and i dont see ipsw file... I see folder named iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore. Do i have to rename the extension of this folder to restore? Please help!!! THanks
