Use sn0wbreeze. It supports the iPhone 3G. It's the Windows equivalent to Pwnagetool.

Ultrasn0w will not support the unlock if you restore to a stock firmware of 4.1
You have to preserve your current baseband and to get to a jailbroken 4.1 is to use Snowbreeze 2.0.2 to create your custom firmware.
You will need to run Ireb 4.1 first and then Shift + Restore to your created snowbreeze_4.1.ipsw which is located on your desktop.
Once restored you are already jailbroken at 4.1 and unlock with Ultrasn0w again.

Hi,
Could I please get clarification...
I have a 3Gs on 4.0 jailbroken and unlocked on the 05.11.07 baseband. If I use Pwnage Tool 4.1.2 to upgrade to 4.1 it will not upgrade my baseband ? Will Pwnage Tool 4.1.3 Unlock Edition work the same way ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Don't use the pwnagetool unlock edition. That's for a different bb version.
Use PT 4.1.2. Baseband will remain as it is (unlockable). Follow the excellent totorial in iClarified:

Hi Mes,
That iClarified Tutorial says to use PT 4.1.3... so will this be correct?
Cheers..

Oops... Yes, follow iclarified's tutorial to the 'T' and you will be fine.
BTW: if you don't understand something, read again, ask. Guessing can lead to big trouble.
