Hi Guys,
I'm trying to update my locked iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 to 4.0 and then jailbreak. I have tried using the shift + update/restore keep getting error 3194. phone is not in dfu mode. I have itunes pointed to cydia server

You can't update unless you have SHSH blobs with that method. Do you have SHSH blobs for 4.0?

If not you need to find out if you have an old or new bootrom 3GS. Use iDetector from iH8sn0w.com | Jailbreak your iPod touches and iPhones to find out.

If it's old bootrom, jailbreak it on 3.1.2 using redsn0w and then do a custom firmware restore to 4.0.x using snowbreeze (if you can get a mac the new Pwnagetool will be out soon and you can go up to 4.1 if you like).

Use blackra1n to JB at 3.1.2 before using custom firmware (if you are on old bootrom)

New pwnagetool was supposed to be out today and would work on new bootrom too.
