I can jailbreak my Iphone 4 by visiting jailbreakme.com?

and would I have to preserve my baseband with tiny umbrella beforehand?

Jailbreakme only works on 4.0/4.0.1 for iPhone 4.

What iOS is your iPhone 4 running at the moment?

Tinyumbrella is used to preserve baseband while upgrading to 4.1.

Download tiny umbrella
Click select your device name on the left
key in your 4.1 version
click save shsh
Now start tss server
Do the shift + Restore to 4.1
Error 1004 pops up
Use kick out of recovery to get to Home Screen.

So I would do the above before I jailbreak my 4.01 iphone...then
update to 4.1 through itunes?

Yes that will help you preserve your baseband if you need an unlock, if not just update to 4.1 and jb it with greenpois0n.
