Problem with tiny umbrella

I have a 3GS running 3.1.2 with the 3.1.3 fooler so it shows that I am on 3.1.3 when in actuallity I am on 3.1.2. I have shsh's for everything from 3.0 to 4.1. I am jailbroken but I think it is with spirit. So I tried to restore to 3.1.2 using tiny umbrella. I opened umbrella selected 3.1.2 started tss and opened itunes, hit shift/restore and it said retrieving file then it said confirming with itunes and it just sat there for half an hour. when I tried to close itunes it said I couldn't close because it was restoring my phone. I had to cont/alt/del to get of itunes. So I tried it again and this time I got error message 3194.
What I am trying to do in the long run is restore to 3.1.2,jailbreak with redsnow 0.9.4 then restore to 4.1 using snowbreeze. Anyone know what my problem is?
sorry this is so long winded but thought if I condensed it to one post it might make it clearer.

Are you clicking "run TSS server"? That's what allows you to restore. You don't have to click on any specific firmware.. Just make sure the app says TSS server running. Also a new version came out yesterday...

yes, I clicked on run tss and when the box came up I chose 3.1.2

John, Click display shsh to see if your 3.1.2 shsh blogs is there. If it is not there, then you have to request it from Cydia first and then start your Tss Server again to do the restore.

Now, with the 3gs 3.1.2 shsh blogs still highlighting it under device/version, now start your Tss server and do the restore.

does the scrolling bar above tss server continue to scroll thru the whole process or am I supposed to wait for it to stop scrolling before going to itunes and shift restore?

Once your restore has finished, you can stop it.

Did you put your iphone into DFU mode ?

Now, use TU to kick it out first

no I didn't put it into dfu mode. I didn't read anywhere to do that. When do I put it into dfu mode? before starting tss or after I open I tunes?

If you are downgrading from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2, you put it in DFU mode, Start tss server, Itunes will pop up for you to restore, now do the thingy.

I am not downgrading from 3.1.3, I am on 3.1.2 and running "firmware 3.1.3 app" it just convinces certain apps that need 3.1.3 that it is but it is really still 3.1.2. I just checked the description in my installed apps in cydia and the program has been updated to 4.0. but mine still says its on 3.1.3?

Don't worry, try in Dfu mode first, if it doesn't work , you can try in revovery mode. You might need to reboot your pc. Do you have itunes anywhere from 8.2 onwards to 9.0. You will need Itunes 10 later for custom firmware of 4.1.

I have the new itunes 10.1 I think it is. ok, dumb question, do I turn the phone off and then do dfu mode? And again, when do I put it in dfu? Prior to starting tss?

With your phone being plug in , hold both the button for 10 secs and release the Power but keep holding the Home button for another 10 secs.

I ran it twice, first time error code 3014 second time error code 3194

Just read it to me what shsh blogs is in there , it is either you grab the 3g 3.1.2 shsh blogs instead of 3gs or you have a corrupted 3.1.2 shsh blogs.
John, Start Tss Server again , highlight 4.0.1 shsh blogs > Shift + Restore to 4.0.1. Let it restore
