Upgrading jailbroken iphone to firmwave 4.0

Please bear with me as I'm new to this!

I have an iphone 3G which I jailbroke a few months ago. It is running firmware 3.1.2

I would like to upgrade the version to 4.0 if possible. Is it possible to upgrade an already jailbroken phone?

Would someone be able to guide me through this process and tell me what i will need to do?

It's possible to upgrade a jailbroken phone, but if I were you I wouldn't upgrade to 4.0 on a 3G. It slows your phone way down. If you want to upgrade, upgrade to 4.1. How you upgrade depends on if you want/need your phone unlocked for another carrier or not.
