For the 3g, use snowbreeze or redsnow. I tried redsnow with windows and it would stall at uploading ram disk. Snowbreeze worked perfect though.

Two questions, do you need an unlock and if so were you able to restore from a previous backup?
So far, I've made progress JB'ing (via PwnageTool bundle hack) and then unlocked, but haven't got past the roadblock of not being able to sync backups. From what I've seen of other 3G owners attempting 4.1, no one else has either without having an official sim card; hacktivation has issues. I'd love it if there is a way around this.

For 3G, breezesn0w 2.0.2 will be best tool to use, just be sure to unselect activation when cooking a customer 4.1 firmware, to use official SIM to activate your phone after restoring customer firmware using iTunes. Use ultrasn0w to unlock your phone later if you want to. My 3G is running great on 4.1 jailbroke and unlocked without any issue.

Nope, no unlock needed for my phone. Maybe that's why my snowbreeze jailbreak went so smoothly..?
